Tough call Burrowing Owl vs El Dorado Hills..... Very easy to predict these two would meet in their bracket final & for the challenge predictor I went with El Dorado because it was more fun to play, varied & unlike Burrowing Owl wasn't all downhill off the tees (bar the last hole)... not read any judges comments picking up on that flaw btw, if it is a flaw? Spot on with the other 3 semi finalists so happy with that. I'm not sure that having elevated tees on most holes is a flaw. A designer can have an elevated tee (or an uphill shot for that matter) on every hole if the shot fits that particular hole. Sometimes elevation becomes redundant and begins to feel overdone...I'm not sure any of the judges felt that on Burrowing. I never caught myself saying, "Greaaaatttt...another elevated tee shot." I did find myself saying, "Greeeaaatttt...the wind is in my face on yet another hole." It's just a matter of perspective. What one person notices and it stands out as a negative doesn't have the same effect on others. Cackalacky is another good example...you said that using so many bunkers in boreal theme killed the theme and wasn't natural....yet everybody that lives or has played down in this part of the US thought it was pretty spot on for a southern dunes styled course...it's actually the way courses down here look. None of this is said to call you out, just offering up how people often times see things differently. El Dorado vs Burrowing Owl was far from a slam dunk. It was simply a matter of when putting both courses side by side and playing them multiple times against each other Burrowing Owl graded out higher...on every scoresheet. Both courses did some great things, both courses had some issues. Obviously there will be people that disagree with the decision on every single matchup (hell, it's not uncommon for the judges to disagree), but the scores wouldn't have changed had we replayed this one another 20 times. And before the real bullshizz gets started I'm going to point out that this has NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH THE NAME ON THE COURSE. Anybody that starts that crap in these threads can and will be removed from the conversation, and that individual should probably just not sign up for any more of these. It's completely untrue, unfounded, and, frankly, an insult to the integrity to the judging panel. We don't give a flying crap who did what course.

Congrats Ola on the well deserved win. Make sure you beat the rest (except Chad, he's the winner in my bracket) Thnx man. Not sure I'll reach the finals, but I'll do what I can to ruin your bracket predictions if I get there! I'll see your course on tour!

Just been reading through the judging over the past few rounds as I published the course and kind of forgot about the contest! Quite surprised I'm into the finals. Great work Griff with running another fantastic contest. So many great courses to be used on tour are created because of contests like these.
Good luck to the other finalists!

Spot on with the other 3 semi finalists so happy with that. Been doing quite a bit of studying lately. Cannuck has it bang on. He's painting you a picture from the tee then again from the approach shot. He's making it a visual experience as well as a playing experience. He does both quite well IMHO. Only fault I find with his courses is it is more visual than play. Both are great, but visual nudges play. I would like to see more light and less of the sun ball in playing his courses. But that is my only complaint. But he is using light to dress up a nice hole among using lots of other stuff. My complaint about pretty much every other course in the game is not enough time is spent on visuals or to much time spent on the visuals both of which are producing poor results. IMHO First you must make the hole nice, it could stand on its own with nothing more done, then you make it play nice, then you dress it up. So many of us are using dress up to make a hole/course nice, when all we are doing is putting lipstick on a pig and it shows.

Things must look good and play well. Without a balance a great course can't be achieved. That's my opinion.

laugh if you will, but I was going to place rakes and yardage markers on every hole but the par 3s ... and hazard stakes ... and decided not too just for that reason ... the 24-1 movable obstruction rule ... and the big stink it created. Almost as fun as the chipping on the green argument ... "The Rules of Golf allow the use of any golf club to play any golf shot." I wont even get into the sand trap / bunker / sand dune creation in this game, let alone cart paths and first cuts of rough. But in this part of the country, level cart paths are not the norm. Earthquakes, tree roots, and slope erosion ... but I digress, and care less on trivial matters. Not my contest or, my money ... so I don't control the rules. Again, congrats to those that advanced to the final fourregardless of what the 28 (26?) other designers think ... Community got some decent courses ... except that crappy El Dorado stink pond .... LOL ... with the sand dune wannabe's ...

I was just being a smart-aleck as the rakes were blamed for a loss...and it couldn't have been further from the truth.

"Would you like more fairway with your sand?" & "Even the cart paths are made of sand!" - Totally agreed & the reason I started my post with "Tough call"

I can't imagine how hard it is to judge these things, and don't envy the task. 4 very deserving courses to win their respective brackets, and they had to come through a bunch of other top-notch courses to get there. Congrats to you guys for advancing, and to those of you who made it to the Elite 8 - well done!
