Stagfall C.C. vs Pewter Dunes Judge #1Pewter Dunes - A good looking course. Some bunkers are lumpy in the bottoms. Good green size. I appreciate the movement of the ground around teh greens. Some bumpiness along edges of fairways. Minimal planting works nicely. Some missed chances on bunkers that are kind of missing in a few spots. By that I mean that using mounding around greens is great but I think you could have brought sand more into play on a number of approaches. Hole 5 fairway is too far away...Difficulty is correct for cc. I really like the lighting as well. I can’t help but wish for some elevation on a few more tee shots. The views from the tee can be cluttered at times. PAr 3 holes seem to miss some chances too as the greens are massive and there isn’t a really good “focus” to the holes. Hole 9 is really one of the best holes in the competition. Hole 12 is such a different look from the tee...I wish you’d taken that hillside to the left and really don’t something with it. Either some dramatic contouring or some light planting...just something. Greens overall didn’t feel forced. Maybe not 100% natural but not forced either. Hole 14 is another hole that’ a bit of a departure...And again it feels like something needs to be done to bring it “into the fold” with the rest of the course. Right now holes 12 and 14 are like stepchildren. Still loved...but just a little off. Hole 16 Could have REALLY benefitted from some more elevation work either on the tee or by bumping the back side of the bunkers up.Generally good brushwork throughout. I only noticed a couple of wonky brushes in the round. Green sizes on 4’s and 5’s were good...just the par 3s got away from you. The bunker in front of 18th green? Needed a few more of those around. This one is a pretty lonely little patch of sand. ;-) It’s a really enjoyable round of golf and I see myself coming back more than once. Stagfall Stagfall has a really nice color pallette/lighting scheme working for it. Makes for a very realistic feeling round. The use of single bunker shapes works in places but in others...it just feels kind of lazy. This course does a really nice job on green size on most holes (a couple are a little large…). Long shot in? Bigger green. Short shot? Smaller or separated into sections. The bunker sculpting is pretty minimal throughout. It appears the default bunker depth was acceptable in almost every instance. The planting is nice. It’s not amazing but it works. Speaking of single shapes...greens feel like they just used one plopped down shape as well. I could see this course being very fun to play in real life...but as a video game course it all falls a little flat. There needs to be a little more movement and drama in places. Like many contest courses there are some missed chances. For example...the 2nd shot into 10 is just so lovely...but it could be SPECTACULAR with just a little more time. Same for the approach on 11… just...too many to list. The green shapes to start to get a little tedious as you get the back nine going though… The greens can also be kinda gnarly in spots. There will be many thrown controllers when a three footer scoots by. I do wish that the heavy rough brush had been used in a few more places as a contrast...the natural rough is great but it gets old without that contrasting green. It’s a fun course with some nice hole routing and good flow. Like many others though it’s just unfinished in some ways. Judge #2PD: Like the look of this course. I think the look could have been nailed with a little bit more elevation and some more planting (although the minimal planting looks good). Pretty much spot on for cc difficulty. Not quite sure how I feel about the greens. They seem abnormally large on the par 3's? Solid effort here... Griff:Another matchup, another divided decision. My personal scorecard was a contrast in how clean Stagfall was versus Pewter having more interesting holes. Stagfall plays pretty straight forward, but has a clean feel and looks very natural. Chad made some smart decisions with his planting on most of the course, but did have some areas where more or less would have benefited the overall looks. It's definitely a CC course, and no complaints can be lodged about problems with playability...except that maybe it plays so straight forward that it can lull you to sleep in places. Pewter has more exciting shots, but sculpting issues and some of the bunkers stick out as well. There's some really clever holes here, and (in my opinion) the minimal planting fits the course. As with the other matchups, both courses are likely to be seen in society events and on tour in season 3. After few points and counterpoints the judges finally came to a decision, but it was far from straight forward or easy. Both designers gave us solid courses to contemplate, but only one stays around to fight another day... and the winner is... Stagfall C.C.

Katokosmos Golf Club vs The Reservation at Tomahawque Valley There's lots I would like to add to this matchup, but, frankly, there's not much more we can say. If either want an in depth critique then hit me up in PM and we'll set up a stream where I can pick them apart and you can ask all the questions you want. This has been the most controversial matchup in this round by far. Multiple judges think that the final 5 holes got away from Seth on Katokosmos, but the brilliance of the first 11 are noted as well. Definitely a course that will find a home on tour in season 3, but the final holes could cost this one in a contest setting. Tomahawque has some of the best views in the contest, and rhino definitely stepped up his game for this one. Fun course to play, another course that will be seen on tour, but did the greens doom this one... The judges have officially beaten this matchup to death plus some, and it still remains a divided vote. I point this out only for the sake of letting both designers know you didn't just "lose" this matchup...it was close....VERY close. Well, nothing left to do but pull the band-aid on this one, eh... and the winner is.... The Reservation at Tomahawque Valley

Well, I can't say I'm too disappointed, since I got exactly what I wanted from this competition: some good, comprehensive feedback. Without this competition I know my latest effort wouldn't have turned out nearly as good as it did. Congrats on an excellent course Eddie, and best of luck in the next round!

Ha....thr first time i read this there was no winner listed. Im speechless that Tomahawque advanced and it feels weird advancing past someone i watched tutorial videos of and cut my designer teeth trying to emulate. I appreciate the tips and overview you provided about the course.

Thanks titaneddie for continuing to mess up my bracket! Seriouly though, congrats on the win. Knocked off another fine course and sets up a quarterfinal match between arguably the two most improved designers in the contest. Should be a dandy against rhino4life. Good luck to both of you!

Well I somehow survived the "Matt's Links" gauntlet. Thought Pewter was a great course and very well done.
Good luck Dave. Fantastic looking course you have here. Will once again be looking forward to the judging.

Wow. The judging in this bracket must be the tightest thing ever. I couldn't decide for any of the courses, they all are up to such high standards that the final result must have come to the slightest details.
Great work guys. Judges for doing your thing and designers for making it so hard for the judges.
Congrats to the winners

Have a feeling I may still come second in that balloting

Congrats to the winners You have no idea... we have almost as much banter on the judges thread (3+ pages) about Tomahawque V Kato as we did with Chad V Matt in the first round... In the end it was a split decision... just like Chad's victory in round 1.

Edit: Also, forgot to thank the judges and Griff for all the time and effort they put into these things. It was a lot of fun and I definitely learned a lot of things from it, hopefully I can take what I was given and really scare the bejeezus out of some designers in the next one.
