Started a new course today. Gotham Municipal will be a golf course in a park right smack in the middle of a major metropolis. Here's the plot I have set up:

Bold prediction: it's based on Batman.

Truth be told it's based on New York, but Gotham sounds cool, so there.

A few things about NY's layout. The Avenues (running North/South) are about 3 times farther apart than the Streets (running East/West). Streets accommodate 1 lane, plus parking while avenues accommodate 5 lanes plus parking.
Also, Broadway is on a diagonal. It meets 14th St at 4th ave (Union Square), 23rd St at 5th ave (Madison Square), 34th St at 6th Ave (Herald Square), 42nd St at 7th Ave (Times Square) and 59th St at 8th Ave (Columbus Circle).
Central Park starts at 59th St and is between 5th and 8th Avenues.
Also note that much of northern Manhattan was formed by the movement of glaciers, and the natural terrain is rocky (mostly granite, mica and limestone) and hilly.
Looking forward to this one.

Yeah, I know, it's not actually supposed to be New York, that was just the general idea for the aesthetic. I may change the streets later though.

I'll be impressed that you can fit 18 holes into that park. Neat concept, this one should be really interesting.

It'll be a challenge, but I've got a par 72 laid out (just the waypoints), 7000 yards from what's intended to be the second longest tees. Believe it or not, it's actually 200 acres, I measured. That should be more than enough based on real world courses, I think people just tend to spread things out more in the game since, y'know, you don't have to actually buy the land. And I think if it was too spread out it would be kind of contrary to the concept.

Looking forward to see how this ends up. Big fan of the show "Gotham". Expect it to at least be cloudy/overcast

Given the effort you're taking in plotting this one out, I would take my time and make the course ultra clean and playable. All of the outside edges go for naught if the course isn't at least as good if not better than the eye candy. Just my 2 pennies...

I think that's always the goal really.

My predictions is that if you put Buildings on all those city blocks, your course will run as slow as molasses in January. The chop will be legendary!

You sure?
I mean they're just big blocks right?
They don't move in the wind. They're not complex in any way. Just a big block with a texture slapped onto it.
Not saying that that won't be the case, just saying that if a bunch of buildings kills FPS then HB really screwed the pooch somewhere.

Turns out fences kill the plant meter. Like one section of fence has the impact of like 8 skyscrapers. I may reconsider the exterior border of the park in light of that... although it may not be a problem since the course won't be that heavily planted, really.

So I messed around in a test plot and found that different fences can take up wildly different amounts of the planting meter. In particular, the Brick Wall with Railings (which I used here) takes up at least 20 times more (honestly may be 50 times in some cases) as a function of length than many of the other fences. Stone Walls take up a lot as well. If I'm putting up long sections of brick wall, I can put down 20+ for each tick the planting meter goes up. But a brick wall with railings? The meter ticks up every single segment.
EDIT: The wooden fence too! Almost as bad as the brick wall with railings!
My suggestion if anyone is doing a lot of fence work, at least from a planting meter perspective, DO NOT use the stone walls, the brick wall with railings, or the wooden fence. Most of the others are much less demanding (even the high metal fence, which shouldn't be all that different than the brick wall with railings in theory, is MUCH better).
