Stagfall C.C. vs The Sleeping Giant
Judge #1Sleeping Giant Vs. Stagfall: I don't see any need to try and list faults on either of these courses because there are very few. It's a shame this is a first round match up, because I could easily see either one in the semi's. I enjoyed playing sleeping giant more than stagfall, but I enjoyed the majority of the holes better on Stagfall. I thought Chad did a better job on the lighting, but I thought Matt nailed some of the views. Where I thought the major difference was though, and the reason why I am giving my vote, is that .... Oh, damn...Griff just cut that part out...guess you'll just have to wait to see. Judge #2stagfall vs sleeping giant stagfall: good spline work, great lighting, solid bunkers. felt very real to me with some solid views throughout the course. good clean course that's fun to play with some great cart path work ...about time. also good textures, planting was good, missed some areas here and there. sleeping giant: this course has some great views and is very clean. some monster fairways, some very nice bunkers and greens. easily a cc course, but you can tell designer ran out of time. felt like something was missing... cant wait to see the final edition this was a painful decision, but by a nose I'm going with... Griff's Final Thoughts:This was one of the toughest matchups the judges had to decide on...without a doubt. Both courses are super solid and clean, so no points given or taken from either in that regard. It is a contrast of styles, so there's no direct comparison...no points given or taken there either. Matt gives you different looks off the tee and makes you think about your shots more than Chad, but sometimes the lack of "direction" takes away from the course here and there. Chad's course looks and plays very well, but sometimes lacks imagination in making players use a shot that's not just freely given. Matt has some amazing planting that really sets the tone for The Sleeping Giant, but it has some areas that just feel "empty". Knowing some of the backstory, he had plans to have a fishing village and some other eye candy, but just ran out of time. As we always say, that's great, but we can only judge what's in front of us..not what will change or could have been. On that same note, Chad did a great job at using a natural feel to his planting with some rock work that just plain fit Stagfall. However, there were times where it was not needed to the point of almost being a distraction to other good things he had going on and it just made an area or 2 feel "busy". This is a rough one that none of us want to make a call on. That being said, only one of these great courses can move on... and the winner is...

Petrichor Golf vs Katokosmos Golf Club
Petrichor Golf Judge's Comments:Judge #1Petrichor Has a lot of finishing features (helicopters and such). Loved the 4th hole as risk reward. The mountains behind the 5th tee are ugly... ruins the look back to the tee. Bunker work seems solid, if possibly too large. Did not like the rock on 7th green with tgc sign. Wish the 8th tee was open to the green to bring it a risk of attacking the green. Not a fan of the two tee boxes that are within 80 yards of each other on total yardage.. seems like some holes play similar from both tees. Some of the greens are iffy for the cc level. Judge #2Overal impressions: The course is nice. It’s not bad. It’s not great. The spacing is off. The bunkering is off. Some are big bunkers set into the ground nicely. Some are smaller and put in groups and pretty much lie in the ground without much help. Some tee shots are good...some are just wonky. Pros - Clean edges Some neat hole ideas Some good tee shots Shows thought throughout Cons - Feels artificial due to scale problems Spacing issues everywhere Some odd choices on fairway shapes and angles from the tee Blocked views all over Some greens that are wonky Judge #3 petrichor: wow, this course has a very deary look... almost depressing at times... way too dark. i think the bunkers were just thrown in at times. has some good ideas. mountain on one hole didn't fit...liked he sunk trees in ground but one hole its way too close to the green... kinda overhangs it Katokosmos Golf Club Judge's CommentsJudge #1Katokosmos Not a lot to say about this. Course is clean, holes look nice, and has a lot of nice views. Plays well and looks like a cc course. Particularly like the 7th and 12th holes. Judge #2Overal impressions: So...a nice style. VERY clean. Very well done technically. However...a few holes just fall into a hole and are lost. I’m very sad at the lost grandeur that could be had on many holes. There are a few good standout holes like 11 which is just fantastic. How that hole could be designed and then the same guy make holes 12 to 17 is beyond my imagining. Pros: Lovely hole routing. Great bunker shaping Planting that does it’s job well Elevations that DO exist are done nicely Cons: Some holes are almost placeholders in their flatness and lack of interest Some bunkers that are not in play and do not do ENOUGH to validate their existence for visual impact alone Greens that don’t use the surrounding terrain ENOUGH No tissues were provided for my tears of sorrow Judge #3kato: this course... great brush work with solid sculpting, has minimal planting but good in spots, greens played well. a good cc course. bunkers were solid... could have shown off them more with some more sculpting. a solid clean course with minimal planting done well The VerdictKatokosmos - Some really lovely holes and good routing with nice bunkering...but then there are holes 12-17 which almost feel like "oh crap I need to publish!" holes...which is odd since it was out so early. Very clean. Good course. Petrichor - The course shows thought throughout and has some good ideas...but the spacing of hazards is off pretty much everywhere, there are some odd angles and shapes from the tee, blocked views all over... Clean technically...but messy from a hole design standpoint. Griff's Final ThoughtsThis was always going to be a very intriguing matchup. Seth and Pablo both know their way around the designer, and both are very good at creating unique looks and ways to play a course. This one was pretty close in the judging, and is highlighted in 2 very different approaches. Katokosmos gets points in being the cleaner of the 2 courses. Pablo gets points in some of the chances he took throughout his course. Both a very solid courses that will find their ways on tour, so that makes it just that much harder. On my scoresheets one edged the other by the slimmest of margins. Did the other judges agree with me? And the winner is...

TPC Edgemere vs The Reservation at Tomahawque ValleyD
Judge #1So, edgemere is an odd duck. It's pretty clean, has some nice hole ideas here and there and the lighting is really nice. It's an enjoyable round of golf...but the fairways are all over the place. Here it's straight, there an angle, there a triple dogleg looking thing... Its just a mixed bag with some good and some wonky. The Reservation at "Egg Watch" has some of the loveliest views so far. It has some really good hole ideas. It does use trees more often than it needs to but most of the time it's ok. The greens are FUNK-AY! I don't mind them...but they will PUSH the CC crowd hard. The bunkers are ok but I think the orientation of some of the fingers/sand is wrong (places where the sand should be closer to the fairway/green but instead there is a patch of fairway and the sand curves AWAY from the play surface) Judge #2TPC Edgemere vs The Reservation TPC is a clean course, but fairways were odd. seemed to have pins on heavy tiers right next to the 3 foot slopes... became repetitive. didnt care for the bunkers being sunken in like that...missed a chance to show them off. Reservation has nice views off the tee. one of the few who did some clean cart paths too... make it look good. bunkers had the consistent shaping throughout. greens were wonky but playable. Griff's Final Thoughts:This one was another close one to call, but for different reasons. Both courses are relatively clean, both courses should find their way on tour, both courses could arguably be just a tad past the CC threshold. That being said, they are both courses worthy of plays and have contrasting styles, and that's what made it such a dilemma in deciding a winner. Well done to both joegolferg and rhino4life for making this such a tough matchup to judge. and the winner is...

These two were really good courses, and the best one won. Fair and obvious. And my next course will be much better

No sweat Pablo. Kills me that we met in the first round. You know I always root for you. Best of luck in the next one sir. But it is what it is. The draw put us together, you made a fantastic course and so did I. But you won, it's fair. And after taking part in four contests I know the next course will be a great step forward...
