Hey guys! As some of you may know, I just got back from my honeymoon. I spent part of it in Maui and my lovely wife actually let me play some golf during part of it. I had a big choice, I was either going to play one round at Kapalua Plantation (about an hour away) or two rounds at Wailea Golf Club (Gold and Emerald course) about 2 minutes from where I was staying. I went with 2 rounds at Wailea and it did not disappoint. I also ended up driving to Kapalua on our last day and getting some pics.
First Round - Wailea Emerald Course- My wife Megan caddied for me this round. I was lucky enough to sneak out as a single and played in just over 3 hours. The conditions and upkeep of this course was like nothing I have ever seen...and the views... well, see for yourself. I didn't play that well, was adjusting to the rental clubs (Taylor Made M2's, pretty decent) and shot 89.
Hole 5- Short downhill par 4
Hole 12 - Downhill dogleg left. Piped this drive down the middle, but flubbed a picture perfect 120 yard approach and made bogey.
Hole 18 - Par 5. The most jaw dropping tee shot I have ever hit, hit a good one too and made par to finish up.
Second Round - Wailea Gold. I went out without my caddy (who stayed in bed) so I could be the second group out of the day. I was just following a single to I played really slowly and still finished in under 3 hours. The Gold course is the harder one of the two, it used to host the Champions Tour Skins and LPGA Tour Skins a few years back. Robert Trent Jones design, 94 bunkers...a real beast. I played very well here (for me), shot 81. Two birdies on the back, but a double on 17 prevented any chance from breaking 80. This course didn't have as many jaw dropping views as the Emerald course did, but I enjoyed the layout more.
Hole 1 approach - Sun still coming up.
Hole 1 green - a tap in par to start the day!
I forgot what hole this one was....4 maybe? 5? anyway, it was a nice tee shot.
8th hole- the signature par 3 at the gold course. Lava rocks and ocean views. Misjudged distance here and landed well short and made bogey.
16th - 178 yard par 3. Almost aced this one...the workers at the back gave quite a reaction so I knew I must have been close....tapped in for birdie!
18th hole - Long sweeping dogleg par 4, another beauty finishing hole.
Kapalua Plantation Course- While waiting for our redeye home, we drove up to Kapalua, bought some stuff at the proshop and had a look around. Didn't play it, but I'll be playing the next time I'm in Maui (whenever that is)
