never played a proper 18 hole course, only par 3 courses and I still struggle to get better than 70 on those! What score do you think I should aim to get on a regular basis before moving to full course membership? I play once a week I have played with varying skills levels, from the wife, to good buddy's, fellow club members, and for a few years I used to play with members from a mini tour. The mini tour members and my schedule would match up, 4:15 pm after work, off the tee we would go. I would shoot around 90, sometimes higher, sometimes lower. The guys I was playing with, -4, -6 even a couple over. Driving the ball 385, driving par 4's, mid irons into par 5's, then there was me. Man did I feel like a duck out of water.
However for 5 years, there we were, on the tee, me in absolute awe, them just playing their practice rounds. I watched one day, one of them cave in the face of the driver, a cobra, I remember that because I had the same driver. For years we did this till I moved to a different club, but you know barely a weekend went by where I would not be invited to play with them at some other club. It did not matter to them, that I played a different game then them. They never played for money, never even suggested it.
Long story to a short point, score is not important. I have a cursory look rule, if I hit my ball into the woods, it gets a cursory look then I drop. Fastest drop in the west, no one need help me look for my golf balls, I prefer if they did not help. I did not, nor do I have an emotional attachment to them, there are plenty more. So I do not hold up better players, I don't dilly dally, or completely hack my way around a course either.
I have a best golf buddy that we travel on golf trips a few times per year, he is getting better, but he is a hacker. I taught him how to play without the search for balls, that is the most annoying part about playing someone with who hacks their way around a course. If they continually need to hunt for their wayward shots. Just drop another and hit, no one cares if you shoot 125 or 127. I do not care if he hacks up the course or shoots 140, I completely enjoy my rounds and my trips with him.
No one cares if you play by every rule in the book when you are learning. Its called cottage golf, learn it, play it. It's far more enjoyable for you and the people around you.
What is cottage golf, well to sum it up, it's not hunting for golf balls, mulligans are fine to a set limit, kick ups, tip ups, kick outs. As you improve you can add a few rules into the game as you wish.
So my point, you can play now, and play with anyone and everyone of all skill levels, RIGHT NOW and play anywhere and everywhere. Golf is interesting wherein you are seldom playing against the person in your group, it's you against the course mostly no matter how many people are in your group.

and 95% of golfers can only wish to shoot even. Much so on a public course. So its not like there will be many people looking down on you or caring how you play as long as you keep pace. I shoot around 105-125, 90 was my best.

I was fortunate to grow up on two stellar semi-private tracks, where I've probably played 90% of all the total golf in my life (and that's a lot). I learned the game at Cedarbrook Country Club in Elkin, NC: and I played the most golf during my teens at Drayton Valley G&CC in Drayton Valley, AB, CA: In high school, I played a lot at Tanglewood Park (Host of the 1977 PGA Championship won by Lee Trevino): And at Bermuda Run CC, which used to host a Charity/Celebrity event called the Crosby (still one of my favorite courses, ever): Among the best of the "elite" or "high-end" courses, I've played Stonewall Jackson Resort in W. Va.: Amelia National: and my personal favorite, TPC Sawgrass:

totally not within the thread...but I just have to mention somewhere that if you're ever in central ohio you need to go play the "Longaberger" golf course in Nashport. Yes they are known for baskets...but the course is really really great and a blast to play. If you get a shot do it for sure.

I grew up in Utah and have played all over that state, especially with junior tournaments, high school and college golf teams that I have played on. I have also played courses in Hawaii, Nevada, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. I now live in Ohio and have been having fun exploring new courses here. Most famous course that I have played is Firestone CC. Bucket list courses: Pebble Beach, Augusta and TPC at Sawgrass. Im sure there are more but can't think of them.

Shaker Run is a great course!

I have played Shaker actually. It's been quite a while but I recall it being good fun. I played more courses to the north than to the South. I was in Columbus at the time.

I played a lot of Golf when I lived in Florida (90-96) on the Gulf coast. Playing in the heat of the Summer when there are no tourist is very inexpensive, especially if your walking.
The Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club, Clearwater, FL
It's only a Par 69 but it is Very Nice place to spend an afternoon, and all the proceeds go to support The Chi Chi Rodriguez Academy, a School for "at-risk" Kids. I played this course scores of times
I also had the privilege of playing the TPC Tampa on one occasion, and probably every Public course within 30 miles of the bay, 90% of my Golf Played in my life was during this time.
