Please don't put a bunch of rocks around a green (especially with water in front of the rocks) and not make the rocks OB.
Simply don't have the rocks at all and just have a slope back to the water.
Rocks = hack it out failure for playing and don't add much to the look of a course, IMO.

I had to remove some rocks from near the green on my course as in practice i got stuck in them.. But surely no matter how bad things get the unplayable is an option?

or design your green where if you hit those rocks you way under clubbed.

Then I guess you won't like one of my current WIPs....
As beamstas said, I'd just make the player take an unplayable, as rocks can be very appealing in terms of visuals. Of course, I don't know the specific scenario you're talking about, but I like how rocks look with some planting styles.
