EDIT: 9 HOLE BETA PUBLISHED. FEEDBACK APPRECIATED SEARCH "RSV9HOLEBETA"So i'm not much of a designer.. Really just play the tours.. but have wanted to design a Boreal theme course for a while now so I though I might give it a go. The planting is not going to be super amazing so hopefully I can make up for it with some interesting risk/reward ideas I have in my head.. Anyway here are some photos, hole 1 is almost done, just need some more sculpting and try to do some planting to make it look better. This hole may not end up being hole #1 if i can find more of a "signature view" but its the first hole I've completed so we'll start here .. Measuring (the yellow lines dont show up in my screenshot for some reason) Anyway wish me luck.. it's not going to be a great course, some may even hate it, but I've had the itch to design something so here we go...

UPDATE2nd Hole Par 33rd Hole 480 Yd Par 44th ~520yd par 5 dogleg5th Short Par 4Im having trouble with the 5th Green.. in the course creator the slopes are yellow, when i play test the green some of them load as red.. Is this a common issue? I like the contours in the green when in the creator, but i know some designers get a hard time for having red on the green. Any suggestions? Course is slowly coming along.. there will be more trees/shrubs when i get the holes routed, for now its the bare minimum, for example the dog leg par 5 will have more trees in the dogleg, but still leave a 5-10yd path for the risk/reward shot for the green through the trees.. Some parts i havn't even added rough around the edges of the bunkers.. the screenshots are still very early on.. no polishing done at all yet.

Go the safe route and land to the right of the bunker, making this hole unreachable in 2 with another choice to make, 3 wood to just short of the green, or a safe long iron between the bunkers? Or try sneak your drive past the bunker and have a chance at eagle? The closer to the water you go, the better angle you have; ) This hole places a premium on risk reward. At only 524 yards it is reachable via the short route, but plays a lot longer if you play it safe. Minimal planting.. Still alot of work to do. But routing the holes is coming along. The course isnt going to play very long.. i enjoy short holes where you can make a great score but will punish you for biting off too much..

This is looking nice Brad. I'll be more than happy to check out the 9 whenever it's ready. Not bad for a Taswegian.

The one thing I don't like is the lighting, can hardly see much of anything

Jives beat me to it -- You appear to have done some really, really nice sculpting work (photos #2 and #3 in your OP), so I'd hate to see much of it lost to the shadows. Of course, it all depends on the look/feel you want to impart on the design, but maybe a little more light would enhance the work you've done.
Looking forward to seeing the final product!

Does anybody have any lighting tips, or do you just play with it until it looks good?

Does anybody have any lighting tips, or do you just play with it until it looks good? Play with it and always think about shadows. Lighting can lag up your file quicker than everything that isn't multiplanting.

UPDATE: RSV9HOLEBETA Published, please let me know what you think. Have spent most of the morning sculpting around the edges of fairways, adding small hills as backdrops, and tinkering with the greens. From some angles the grid markers on the green shows red slopes (these do not appear in the editor), i am working on eliminating all red slopes from the greens, thoughts? Is it okay to leave some very small red slopes? There are a mix of difficult and easy pins. I have set aside areas of the green for possible multi pin in the future, but to start with I have just put a mix of difficult and easy pins. Tried to include a mix of front & back pins. Some of the holes are on green slopes, but as the holes are short emphasis is on placing your approaches for easier putts.
Would really love some feedback from experienced designers before i start on the back 9. Thanks for your time.

OK Brad I just played your beta and enjoyed it. I know you're looking for feedback from experienced designers and you won't get that from me cos' I can't design for sh%$. But I can tell you how it played for me and why I enjoyed the round.
It wasn't boring and to my untrained eye everything looked good. I'll comment on the features that stood out for me as a player.
1. I thought the opening tee shot across the water was nice and set the tone for what was to come. 2. 4th hole par 5. Wind was favourable to make the green in two so I went through the gap in the trees and set myself up for an eagle putt from 15 feet. Missed the putt but enjoyed the hole. 3. 5th hole. Nice risk and reward setup and again the wind was favourable. Enjoyed the hole. 4. 6th hole. Another good risk/reward hole. Once again wind was favourable and I almost made the green in one. Finished up on the fringe. Easy birdie. 5. 7th hole was a tough tee shot across the water towards what I call a sideways fairway in 13 mph cross wind. Big sigh of relief - I made the fairway.
Thats about it Brad. As I said I enjoyed it and I could see this course hosting a tour maybe on CC? It will be interesting to see what any designers have to say. I hope you get some useful feedback. For what it's worth I found the present setup fairly easy, even with a bit of wind, and finished up -6 for the nine.
Well done mate, good job.
