Welcome to Overfield Country Club, a traditional hillside course founded in 1953, located just outside of Carlisle, PA. Nestled in the rolling valleys very close to where the Appalachian Trail crosses over the mountain, this layout hosted many years of Member/Guest and Club Championship events as a private entity before surrendering to a declining membership market in Central Pennsylvania and opening it's doors to the public in 2005 as a well-maintained, semi-private option for local players. It's hard to say for sure what caused the declining interest, whether it was too many public courses in the area offering discounted rates and coupon books, or if weekend golfers are no longer looking for that 'exclusive' social atmosphere that membership in a private club provides, but no matter the cause, the course has managed to survive because people still prefer the wide fairways, picturesque views, and potential for lots of birdies and a good round to tell their friends about. Overfield Country Club plays as a conventional par 72 measuring just 7,019 yards from the blue tees, but white and red markers are available to accommodate golfers of all skill levels, and rumor has it that the course is looking to rediscover the overgrown and abandoned black tee boxes that used to be the pride of Club Championship bragging rights in its prime. The membership that remains still prefer the greens to roll at a fairly quick 13 on the meter, and the public golfers likes to test their skills on the locally renowned slick surfaces, but the superintendent keeps them watered and receptive to accurate shots. With only mild undulations the greens are often challenging but fair, and a good putter will see the ball disappear into the hole more often than not. If you choose to walk the fairways of Overfield Country Club in The Golf Club, you'll enjoy the course during its height of beauty, in the fall. Although the changing leaves will catch your eye, along with strategically placed water hazards and bunkers, they will likely be nothing more than an ambiance to a peaceful and enjoyable round of golf. In fact, if you're quiet and you look closely, you're likely to see the woodland creatures making an appearance during your round. Please stop by and let us know how your day went, our club professional is always willing to lend an ear to a good golf story. The 10th The 12th

Since it looks like I'm going solo on TGCT AfterDark tonight I'll break away from I had scheduled and do this as more of a course critique. 9pm EST at if you want to watch live...otherwise it will be archived.

When AfterDark is over I'll do a write up with my thoughts, but in general I thought you did a very nice job!

Sorry I didn't get to you earlier, my internet went out last night and I've been stuck at work this morning... Anyway, the review. I thought that it was a great course, especially considering it was your first design. Two things that really stood out to me were sculpting and planting. Both were done very well, and if you improve what I'm about to mention, then you could put out something very special. First I will bring up the third hole. Personally, I think the fairway starts way too far from the tee. I had a 14mph headwind, so I decided to aim at the area of fairway closest to the tee, and I still barely made it. I don't know about others, but I've seen the wind get up as high as 27mph. In harvest, the highest I've seen it is 20mph, but that hole would still be unplayable in that wind. Next up is just a really tiny thing I saw on Hole 5 that's a bit nit-picky of me, but I'd like to bring it up. All over the course, you have the bunkers cutting into the first cut, which is a style that's fine, but there is one spot where a bit of heavy rough shows up: It shows up near the center of the picture. I'd either place some light rough over it or just not have bunkers cut into the rough. Easy fix, really. Next is hole 7. First of all, the edge of the creek is a little sharp on the side that he green is on, but that's just personal preference. My issue with this is the green. If someone hits a bad shot, there is WAY too much red. Multi-tiered greens can be fun, but this one was a little excessive: Last thing I'll bring up his hole 9. The retaining wall looks good from the tee, but when you're putting from above the hole, you can see underneath the back of the wall: I'd suggest tuning into Griff's twitch stream sometime to see how he does retaining wall. That's all I can think of, other than those things, I think it was a good effort and that you can continue to pump out good courses and find them listed on tour schedules. Cheers!

Thank you so much for taking the time to play & review.
3: you are 100% correct, that needs to be fixed
5: agh, that wasn't intentional, I apparently missed that piece
7: the creek was designed that way on purpose, but there are several people who don't find it realistic, so I'll take that into account in future designs
7: the green on this hole, and in the 11th hole, need to be fixed before I pin the course, so I totally agree
9: dang, I missed that too! This was my first wall and I fought with it for hours, so I'll fix this as well
17: I will fix the waypoint so it only gives a 5 wood off the tee
Griff and Han had some awesome tips on my bunkering too, so I'll try to rework a few of those if I fix this course for multiple pins/tees.
Very helpful feedback, I really appreciate it.

Not to call him out, but on Canuck's most recent Delta-themed course, he literally did exactly what you did on one hole. I (not that I'm any good lol) took a retaining wall out of Indian Run because of this... so that one isn't really too big of an issue at all. Just a little nitpick that I had.

Hey Eric...I played your course a couple days ago and really enjoyed my round here. Some nice hole designs, planting and lighting were pretty good also. I'm glad you're getting some plays and some really good review write ups. Although the course isn't technically perfect, it's done well. My biggest concern is how the course plays, and in hole 3, that may be a problem. Someone touched on this already, but I'll re-emphasize it...the fairway needs to start at about 215 yards, give or take a couple yards, to be safe in these crazy winds that sometime pop up in our game. The hole will not be playable in very windy conditions. The rule I generally use when I design is hitting a 3 iron from the tee box, which is 207 yards...if you reach with that, you're good to go. Anyway, very nicely done. I will be looking forward to your future projects, especially when TGC2 arrives, as it is rumored to be somewhat easier for designing . I'll look and see if you've submitted this course into our data base...if hole 3 is fixed, this is an approved course for me anyway

I did submit the course for review, unfortunately as it is. I really wish there was a way to overwrite a course, because I'm happy to fix these things. I will be fixing a few things reviewers have brought up and then multipinning/multiteeing the course. So those 4 versions (Thu-Sun) will have the correct setup, but I suppose there's no way to fix the one that's already out there, right?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you could go back in to your course, make the change and then rename the course to publish it again. May want to get another opinion.

Hey Eric, I haven't played the course yet, and Bass is right you could reload it on GNCD and change whatever you wanted.
But this is the advice I give to all the new designers that start building courses. Don't try to make the perfect course in your first try. You won't be able to do that. No one has ever built a perfect course. If you like designing, and I think you do, move on to something new. Apply the feedback (at least the parts you think are worth being applied), try different techniques to reach similar goals. You'll grow much more as a designer like that. And maybe in the future, when you feel more confident with the tools and have become a way much better designer.... Revamp the course.
A couple of things not perfectly done are meaningless, the course is getting attention. Bring something new.
Or the opposite, do what you prefer. That's only my opinion
