I do not design courses so excuse me if I'm venting . . wrongly.
I just played a course where half the tee's automatically used a 3 Wood and not Driver, even though a Driver was the best choice. Cost me at least 4 strokes because BEING NEW I did not make sure I had a Driver. BAM - traps and skinny fairways for a 3 wood while a Driver would have gotten me past.
I this in the game? Do you guys set the default club???

The course you played was most likely by an inexperienced designer. A hole is made by choosing a beginning, middle, and end point. If the middle point is set at less than 265 yards, or the middle point is set greater than 265 but the mid point is not in fairway, the game will default to a lower wood. 245 for the 3 wood, 225 for the 5 wood and so on. The designer was either inexperienced and it was a bad course, or they were intentionally trying to trick people like you who aren't paying attention which is a douche move.

The waypoint should be set so that the default club puts you in the center of the safe landing area. If the landing area is narrow and there's a wider one 30 yards back, then it's OK to set the waypoint so that a 3W or 5W is the default club.
I did this a few times on La Playa Vacia that the CC Pro guys played last week (Holes 3, 4, 11, 13, 15 and 16).
It's up to the player to review his options and decide whether he wants to take more risk.

To answer your question, no, the designers don't set the default club, but we do play-test to see what it is.
Most of us know how to get the default club to be what we want, but every now and then a bad one slips out.

SO it's a waypoint - I understand - I use to design in Links. Sorry - I was just pissed. It was a easy course and was not gimmicky (sort of fun) but when I saw 3 GHOSTS hitting 265 I ASSUMED I had a driver in my hand until I was squeezed or hit a trap on the 250 area. LOL
I've only play 40 rounds so I'm still in the learning stage of buffoonish mistakes but I was peeved that THAT was not really "my" mistake.
This was in a smaller tournament for us poorer CC-E/Z players

Another reason for this might be that the course has been setup for a tour event. What I mean by that is not that the designer tricked it up, but he might have alternated tees and setup these holes shorter than the original. I usually don't move my way points in these cases as I simply cannot be bothered by it

Just like checking distance, wind speed, and direction, double-checking the club selected is all part of my pre-shot routine...good habit to get into!!

I have no problem with people setting waypoints less than 265, even if 265 makes sense. If you're playing a round, you should be paying attention to things like that, not just getting to a tee and swinging away! As long as they're not giving you a sand wedge, or some other ridiculous club, it's 100% ok in my book.
