I didn't want to say anything!
When I try to hit 60% my range is 50% to 100% !!!!!!
huh? if you quick swing your 30 yrd flop u get 100% wow. Our Dean may be exaggerating (never let the truth get in the way of a good story) but I get where he's coming from. My partial swings are anything between 55 and 85%, which is why I tend to use the PW and chip up to 18/20 yards, unless it's massively quick. As for this 9I chip, witchcraft!

I'm probably the only Top20-player who has never ever used or tried the 9I-chip. Hmmmm... this might be the reason why I'll never win. nope never used it either, lw or sw only chips i use anything further i use 30 yrd flop Okay... I'm not sure if that makes me feel better or worse.

I can't putt for fcuk but any chip between 5-12 yards I KNOW I can at least get to the cup... watch it glance the edge and either go in or stay close. I base it all on th 9iron chip and then work out from there? Did I say I can't putt.....well I can't. but I have got to the pro game and my only strength is my short game. I am more confident to have a 7yd chip from the fringe than a 21ft slider right to left on a 187 green.
sooooo....
you're on are on the fringe or semi rough next to a green and you are between 3 and 11 yards from the pin. Let's set some rules soldier. There are certain factors you need to adhere to....Are you ready?
Rule 1 (solid gold....never NOT do this) ....switch to putter....wtf ...switch to putter noob and see the distance to the pin, the elevation, the nuances of the green and most importantly,is the ball above or below your feet! Then...read it like a putt. If the distance is over 35foot, forget about chipping it soldier and go to the creeper flop thread.Hopefully smurf has one ready and is about to post.
Ok ok so you are in putt mode on the side of the green. How far are you away? Between 9ft and 33ft.....good. then we are in business.switch to 9iron chip mode. What's your lie like? 75% or below? See smurfs creeper flop thread...above that, ok we are back in business....
so if the ball is below/above your feet. Adjust using the shot shaper. Just slight adjustments(they come with experience) ball above feet move slider a fraction to right...if ball below feet adjust A fraction to left. Now the wind ....
but surely Digs b the wind doesn't affect a chip......*slap*....get back in line soldier enough of your backchat... the wind affects your chip... anymore of that I will send you to wagtunes thread about how to stuff your hand up a puppet. Listening now? Right then back to the shot slider. A 7 mph wind from the left move the slider to the left. If you account for each red line of the slider ( on the horizontal) is approximately 13mph ( if any wants to prove me wrong step up soldier, wagtunes is three hours into his story of how he *met* Jerry...your choice.) then you can work out the rest, I'm not your maths teacher.
Slight rewind........ when you were in putt mode, how far were you away from the pin ......really! sorry digs I wasn't paying attention...... gtfo..... you're a tgc player always pay attention to EVERYTHING! So using the shot slider on the vertical this time ....up/down for the yanks....if you get the shot slider ALL the way to the top...that chip WILL go 3 yards 9 foot 0.90 metres for our metric friends ( freaks). The next red line down on the vertical will go 5 yards, the next will go 7yards and then finally 10yards. That's your yardstick.....that's your tools. Play with them how you like.
soooo.... You are in putter mode on the fringe. You are 6 inches below the hole and 10 foot away from the pin.you should x1.5 the 6 inches below and add it to the distance away from the pin so that makes 19 foot from the pin.Now in the fringe and the lie says 89-95% well using maths I reckon go for 21 foot ....7 yards ...what's the green speed 100-150 = slow 150-170=medium 170+ is fast...then use this to calculate the roll out. This comes with practice....if it's a fast green it may roll more than a slow green no sh:t Sherlock....I never said this was easy. If it's a fast green maybe reduce the distance on the vertical shot slider (go up) , if it's a slow green increase the the shot slider ( go down). ....now read the green. Any way the green we are using for this example is a 175 speed stick the shot slider at 2 red notches from the top and read on.....
if it slopes from left to right move the aim marker to the left a notch(a technical term) if it's right to left move the aim marker to the right a notch. You have used the shot shaper to take the wind out of the equation the aim marker for the chip only applies to the last 3 foot of the chip ( the green right next to the pin anything before that should not be worried about) Again this will come with experience miss a chip to the right alter your aim a smudge etc. Now this may seem like a load of bollocks but it has helped me a lot I either have a inches to 2 foot putt for par or I chip in. I not claiming to be an expert and yes it is still a work in progress but if this helps one poor sole then I have shared a little happiness....

Very funny Digs, but more importantly some very useful info. If you're a bit slapdash about your chipping (like me!) this will definitely help to get the ball closer to the hole.

My advice on chipping? Drink heavily, close eyes, chip away!! ...there's a reason I'm mired in CC-D!! Seriously tho, I learned of the lofted 9I chip only recently, and it has made a WORLD of difference in my short game. digsb has put forth some awesome info in his post, he described almost exactly my short game routine, but much, much better than I could have described it!! Tip o' the ol' fedora to him!!

This lofted 9 iron chip intrigues me. How does it differ from just hitting a normal sw chip for instance? Why does a lofted 9 iron work better? I got 3 hole outs final round Happy Trees using 9i, 7 for the tournament. I charted distance practicing. I still have problems downhill but level and up hill pretty good. Mid on scale 9 yds +1 7yds +2 5 yds see below. Like the real world the more you use the club in this situation the better the feel. CHIP YDS mid +1 +2 +3 +4 9i 9, 7, 5 ,4, 3 yds PW 6, 5, 4, 3, 2-3 yds SW 4-5, 3-4, 3, 2 ,2 yds LW 3 2 1
