Olafsen Skerries vs LOCHAVEN
Judge 1: Olafsen Skerries vs LOCHAVEN
Olafsen Skerries
Pros..
Overall look is excellent, with great lighting. Superior sculpting and bunker work. Perfect blending of 1st to 2nd cuts with excellent coloring choice
Cons..
None that hit my eye...
Comments...
This is overall a excellent course with great shore line, shallow water, and bays that give it an extremely realistic look. #'s 12, 15 and 17 are great holes.
LOCHAVEN....
Pros.. Overall look is very nice with some great planting throughout. #7 is a really nice par3 #8 par5 with multi landing areas, very nice.. loved the steps on 14, well done
Cons... I felt there were too many rocks, especially on 16, they looked a little out of place. Also, on over abundance of bunkers, on some holes that just, imo, didn't look quite right.
Comments... This is a very nice course that had the misfortune of drawing a real toughie in this round...
WINNER
Olafsen Skerries.....
Judge 2: Comments coming at a leter time. Winner: Olafsen Skerries

LOCHAVEN vs Cedar Pointe Golf Club
Judges 1 & 2:
Lochaven vs Cedar Pointe Golf Club
(Judge 1) First up, Lochaven
Pros: Pretty good off the tee, a nice variety of tight fairways and choices to be made (whether you can drive bunkers, etc) and then the par 5 15th where you have one of those lovely downhill drives in to a wide fairway where you lick your lips, raise the bar and give it a smack (I had a tail wind and shanked it in to the fairway bunker which is still annoying me!). There's a good variety of hole lengths and it gives you a good test of your game. I thought the greens were very good, they played firm and there were some tricky slopes but there was plenty of room to run your ball at the hole on most of them, and plenty of scope for multi-pinning. The firm settings would mean this course is generally aimed at the higher tiers of players but I thought it was a fair test. The cart paths were nicely done and I liked the hedges that ran along some of them. The 7th and 8th really stood out as nice holes - the wooden fenced path over the scrub on the par 3 7th was really well done, that's a beautiful hole, and the drive on the par 5 8th gave 3 interesting options.
Cons: I wasn't a big fan of the bunkering, a lot of it seemed quite generic with many of them basically being the same shape, size and depth. I also didn't like the big rocks that were pretty prevalent round the whole course, I thought they looked completely out of place here. Not quite sure what the big mound next to the 16th green was all about either? From a gameplay point of view not too much to pick on except the already mentioned 8th tee. If you choose the lay up short of the ribbon bunker option or are forced in to it because of a headwind you are then faced with a second shot with a gigantic tree right on your line. It seems a bit overly penalising for being sensible/having the wrong wind.
Overall I thought it was a pretty solid course from a playability point of view but had a few aesthetic issues, but some great potential with a few tweaks. I scored it 7.5
Cedar Pointe Golf Club
Pros: As soon as you step on the first tee you take a little breath and look around, then go to the overhead scout cam and pan around the course, that overhead is SWEET, seriously good looking course on first impression. And then you start playing around that lake and you realise you weren't wrong, Cedar Pointe is a thing of beauty. From the retaining wall around the lake to the fences around some of the tees to the abundant water hazards to the bunkering, everything is extremely well done and there are a lot of very nice looks as you make your way around. But it's not all looks, it's also a good challenge as a golf course. The fairways are tight and wind this way and that so you have to decide what you can carry and how you need to shape the ball on a lot of them, but they aren't too firm so as long as you make the right choice you can hold them. The greens are huge and fast, but receptive and not tricked up in any way, challenging but in a fair way. I reckon you could get 8 pin sets on that lot! And then a good par 5 to finish, would like to have another go at that in a more favourable wind.
Cons: The lake you play over/round on holes 1,3,4,5, as I've already said I like the retaining wall but does it also need a fence? This was particularly noticeable on the 5th - you know you've got to drive the lake, do you really need to drive the fence too? Just not sure it looked right, it's health and safety gone mad! A lot of the peripheral hazards were very angular, lots of straight lines. This was particularly noticeable on the front 9. It's almost like the course was a bit TOO neat and could do with a bit of roughing up in places, but I know that's being picky. From a playing point of view the course is pretty long which is fine, but could have done with a drivable par 4 or a short par 3 (or both!) to mix things up a bit, no such thing round here. Also I'd be a bit concerned about whether I could reach the fairway from the tee at 15 if the wind really got up and was in your face - I played it in to a 10mph headwind and didn't make it by an awful lot. Also, and this is very much my personal point of view, I hate bunkers in the middle of greens like on the par 3 6th. And yes, I think TPC San Antonio should have a clown face and windmill on that green.
Overall I can't believe I've managed to write so much on cons. Beautiful course and a good fair test. I liked it a lot and have no doubt we'll be seeing it on tour. 8.5 and a clear winner.
(Judge 2) To be honest this was such a lopsided contest I didn't bother with a large, detailed review. Cedar Pointe by a mile. That's not to say Lochaven was rubbish, it was just overmatched. Looking at my notes on Lochaven, I have jagged fairways, terrain work, over-planting & color pallet as negatives. I did find it to be a good challenge, but it just isn't where it needs to be from a technical standpoint. For Cedar Pointe I simply jotted down the word "lovely". A word I would never use in normal conversation, but I went with it. I'll dig a little deeper into this one in the knockout stages, where I fully expect it will end up.
Our winner in this one is Cedar Pointe Golf Club

Olafsen Skerries vs Cedar Pointe Golf Club
Judge 1: Olafsen Skerries
I'm going to start by listing the cons...
ok now that's over with.. this is a superb links course. sculpting is excellent, bunkers are great and greens play well. You really get the feel that you're out on the links playing a round of golf. I could use some of the shots I had as a backdrop. Was expecting to play this course in firm, so pleasant surprise that it was published in medium (I didn't read the course thread before playing). Think this would make a great addition to a tour and use both medium and firm setups.
Ceder Pointe
I played this course twice.. and I got a hurricane both times.. Obviously not designer's fault, but it made this course play really tough. It also didn't help I had winds opposite doglegs, which made driving difficult. Greens are large, with obvious multi pinning in mind. Like it's competitor it has the feel of a real golf course. Thought there might have been a few too many trees in sightlines here.. but that could also be comparing it to its competitor again. Another course that could be solid in a tour with multiple condition setups.
Tough choice for me.. Think both courses are definitely in the top group here, but I need to pick a winner. For me, when the wife comments on how nice a course looks, you know its got to be good. She already considers me a nerd... so complementing a course is huge. Kudos to both designers, but Olafsen is the winner for me
Judge 2: Olafsen
First hole, very nice. Great shallow water sculpting. Nice natural sculpting, great use of textures on 2, nice hole framing. Design on 3 very nice. Little touches behind hole stand out. Like #4 but maybe with a bit more extreme sculpting would be a bit more exciting. My critique of #5: _________ *open jaw* Awesome Planting very natural, great atmosphere #9 green would be one hell of a GIR for a CC player. Only hole that I have a hard time seeing being firmed up. Front tees still look 425 away. Risk reward option every which way, #10 a good example #13 another standout hole. Great ambience, great design. A hole I'd love to play in real life. 16 pretty impossible 2nd shot for any amateur IRL, but @!$# it, it's a game. Awesome finish out on the little finger of land on 17, and 18 very solid and exciting finish.
Generally, no genuine problems, only a few possible missed opportunities. Great course.
Cedar pointe Nice look off #1 Didn't want to work my drive on #1, so laid up with iron. Lots of room on fairway and green. Nice. Another nice, challenging hole on 2. Can't say I'm a fan of the big rock by the fairway though. Very close and planting around could be better. Great risk reward par 5 though. Great item work and planting on 3 and 4. Big rock beside tee at 4 looks better. Sculpting solid. 4 not the best planned out pin/green. Front/back slope, hard to hold close even with short iron in. #5 much better green/approach #7 another nice look off tee. I feel the “fingers” of the bunkers here are a little high and look a bit unnatural. By #8 the drives start to feel a bit repetitive. Slight dogleg around 265 out. #9 not the best look off tee. Bunkers and green hidden by uphill slope. Bunkers bisected by rough...Not a problem, but a lot of fairly extreme slopes running into bunkers so mowing would likely be tough. #11...Another slight dogleg right...Guess at what distance? Like the fences around teeboxes, but wish there was more consistency in how much they came into my screen. Some are 2 feet, others barely in. 13 a tough hole with maybe too challenging of a drive. One of 9 par 4's on this course over 420 yds. (And the only one that isn't is the 1st hole). Maybe even one more short one would have helped. Small detail on 13, but easy to fix. One tree, about 100 yds away, projecting a big shadow over the hole. Bulldoze it! Annoying! Sad! Jk. Channeled Trump for a sec. Hole design just getting way too repetitive by 14. Slight dogleg right. Nice planting still throughout. Great view on 15 but can't see sh%$ because teed up too far back. When I hit my shot? Slight dogleg right. Dammit. Nice hole but maybe a little more accessible pin would pay off a gutsy drive 16 another very nice hole, have to change camera to see green, but nice. Green is appropriately sized, as most have been. #17...SDR. guess what that stands for. Need a changeup in hole design off the tee. Woohoo, different looking drive on 18. Seems a good finisher, but with hole location, no real legit shot at getting close for eagle. Would make it more exciting if one of final 2 par 5's was. That said, good looking hole. Bunkers could be worked a bit.
Overall, a fun course to play, a challenge off the tee for sure, but challenge got a bit repetitive with the doglegs right where every drive goes. Planting was same-ish around whole course...Good, natural, but no big areas that popped, aside from some good bridges, fences and walls. Bunkers seemed a bit off. One side seemed to be too high, too often. Depth is OK though. I think with the greens it could be multi-pinned...Not too many wild decisions, but lots of room.
Both courses are good, but I believe in every way, OLAFSEN SKERRIES is the winner here. Just more polished and more unique and exciting.

both good coures, reebs is just as near flawless as you could have gotten, i only saw 2-3 very minor things that just needed "slight" adjusting. i enjoyed the look of both courses very much.
