Well, even though it was pretty obvious to me what was coming, still a bit disappointing to get swept across the board. You know it's a rough go when one of the "pro's" of your course is " seemed like the finishing holes were rushed" . There's no doubt the other courses are superior, guess I'd just thought that I had at least a few interesting ideas/holes going for me that people would enjoy or find cool. Given the immense amount of time I invested into the course, it is a little disheartening to not get that feeling, but I understand it's part of the process and that I have a long way to go in designing a high quality course. That said, I do greatly appreciate the judges time in playing through all of these and providing their honest feedback. Another congrats to Pablo and Todd on their fantastic work, which clearly outclassed me in the competition, and deservedly so. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this group of designers (using that term loosely for me), hopefully I can figure some things out and work towards creating something that is more polished and fun to play. Thanks Griff for all you've done setting this up and allowing me to participate, and best of luck to my fellow competitors in the upcoming rounds. Cheers boys. You're feeling the same way I did after the web design contest last summer. I came 17th out of 19 iirc, and I thought I put out a good course at the time. Looking back now, I can see the failings of that course. I've now come into this contest and I believe I've given 2 very experienced designers (taste and mroola) a run for their money. I may lose out in the group stage but I know I've made a quality course this time. I've learned so much from these 2 contests and once the disappointment subsides, I'm sure you'll come away from this a better designer, which is only good for the community as a whole. As one of the judges of the web contest I'm delighted to hear this . It's exactly the attitude to have! I know my courses get better as I creat more but I also know what I'm up against I know I wouldn't of got out of this group!

I completely understand the disappointment because of the time that goes into publishing a good course, but I would honestly not let this one get me down too much. You did a lot of good things on this course and had some very good ideas. The "finishing", "polish", "refinement", or whatever term you want to use is where this one fell a little short...and that's to be somewhat expected given that you're a pretty new designer. Since he is in your group, go back and look at Pablo's early work compared to what he releases now...WORLDS of difference. If you stay in the designer and keep publishing you're going to release some very good courses down the road. Like tastegw said, much of a contest comes down to subjectivity. I will, however, argue that every single contest is going to be judged with subjectivity regardless of what format or guidelines one tries to set. Take whomever you believe to be the very best designer in TGC and have them set up the judging criteria...that's still subjective because it's THAT INDIVIDUAL'S opinion of what makes a great course...other top designers will still disagree on certain points. Take what is being said for what it is and keep improving with every course you turn out.

Hey Justin, remember that the judges involved in this competition are not giving a quick play to the courses, they are being really meticulous. They are not saying what your course is missing to be good, they are looking for great courses, the best of the best. And that's why they are pointing at the flaws so clearly. Not because those are huge flaws, but because those are the ones that need more attention for taking each course to the next level.
As Griff says, compare any of my "pre-contests" courses with the ones I made after entering in all the three contests I've been involved in. The improvement is huge. And I can tell you that about 90% of my designing is exactly the same. The key is that another 10%. And that's what is being pinpointed here. I keep reading the reviews the judges made of my courses both in web and Summer Showdown contests, and they are a huge help for me. After that of the three courses I've completed, two have been on tour, and one of them, twice. Being knocked in a contest, even if it's sooner than you expected, can be extremely useful

As I had said earlier at some point... my first one was an autogen. The only other first time course that is in my mind better on an overall scale (not counting bradleystuart's, he took the entire game cycle ) is St. Xavier's, and that hosted an hb event. Pablo and drivert are two of our best designers and you got some points off of them in your first design effort. If you count that as bad... I don't know what's good in your eyes
