The Golf Course @ Oxcross vs Nenestin Estates G.C.
Judge 1:
The Golf Course at Oxcross vs. Nenestin Estates
Almost thought I loaded up the same course 2x, that's how similar these two courses look- using an open Harvest theme. Another very tight battle...played each course 2x and here's my notes and winner:
Nenestin Estates: +Clubhouse complex looks really nice, holes flowed from the clubhouse very seamlessly +Open feel, which allowed good lighting +Hole3 looked and played great. Other great holes I noted were 10, 15, 16 +Had the farmlands off the 4th hole backdrop +O.B. aligned perfectly w/ the fencing +Very polished design- smoothing, contouring, etc. +Tee shots and approach shots framed well, good mix of up and down holes +Bushes and swales/ravines added good atmosphere +Very approachable course by all player types +Green sizes were perfect in my mind for the type of course +/- Hole9 submerged rocks behind the green looked good, but don't see this anywhere else on the course. Liked the rock 'stands' on the right of the green. -I tried to not know who designed what...but I think I know the designer of the track now that the range had a big Titans logo in it. Also didn't fit the theme -Some bunkers were a little off- especially the larger bunkers. Had some jagged lines and weren't as smooth as the smaller bunkers -Had 3 straight holes where the greens (at least near pin) ran from front to back, making it harder to stop the ball. Not a big issue, but against most golf green convention -Hole11 fairway looked a little odd vs. others. It was more linear in design vs. smooth curves on the rest of the course. -Hole13: I love a good short par4, but this one add no danger. Wide open landing area w/ driver, larger green. Would like to see more risk added -Some of the field lines were not parallel. The sand lines joined up in a spot but everywhere else was a zigzag -Found areas where planting was too uniform. Especially the harvest bush, saw a group of ~20 the same size and rotation -Not enough variation in plant/bush sizes. The larger bushes all looked the same size -Hole17 rocks in the rock wall looked too small to me...after the sizing of all the other planting it looked strange to see pebbly rocks.
The Golf Course at Oxcross:
+clubhouse, drive-in area, practice area all looked good +clean course, lines, contours, bunkers, hills, etc. Liked the open feel for good lighting +Gentle sloping greens and breaks provide just enough challenge and bite +Tougher than it appears, which is a good thing +Realistic looking course. Could easily be an RCR and I'd never know +16th and 18th with backdrop of clubhouse area is neat +Nice mix of holes and length +very playable for all skill levels
-Cart paths need more work. Too many waves and ribboned edges. A blatant pinch point seen on the path just right of the first tee -Greens were a tad too small, especially with the firmer conditions. Would like to see them a little larger. Not sure how many great pin locations there may be -Front nine seemed to flow well, but run into larger mountains/hills on the back side that seem a little out of place -Large hill/mountain stole all the nice lighting on hole14, which is all covered in shadow -Rocks on Hole10 to spread out in the lake, and look too similar. Rocks on 12 just doesn't fit my eye...is that a dam or supposed to be a rocky walking path between the fairways there? Don't see the purpose -Bridges need work. Bridge behind 12th green suspended in mid-air. Partner noted other bridges had steps leading up to them...from the cart path. -Left fairway on 18- would anyone want to use it? Hidden and long and blocked by trees. -Several pins made me wonder how one could ever get close without being way short or running over. Like hole10. Don't think you can hold that pin with any shot
I liked both courses and gave them each an '8' in the in-game rating. However, after 2x through each, I think one played better and has more fun replay value, and slightly fewer aestetic issues and irregularities than the other. My winner is: NENESTIN ESTATES
Judge 2: OK lets do this. Once again I will rely on my judging partners excellent write ups.
The Golf Course at Oxcross vs. Nenestin Estates
This was the toughest competition so far. These are both fantastic courses.
Oxcross: Very nice course with great flow. Looks and plays like some of my local courses. Great work on the club house area. I liked the rock dams. My only real knock on it is the placement of some objects/textures. Cart paths should be uniform in shape. Bridges most likely should touch the ground on both sides.
Nenestin: Also a nice course that looks like it could be something I would see locally. Good lay out. The farmland was a nice touch, think I even saw a cow out there. Not much seemed wrong. The 3 consecutive backward sloping greens were an annoyance. Some of the large bunkers looked a bit rough.
In the end the more attention to detail swayed me.
Winner by the narrowest of margins is Nenestin Estates

Nenestin Estates G.C. vs The Hunters Club @ Woody Creek
Judge 1: Nenestin Estates G.C. vs. The Hunters Course @ Woody Creek
Nenestin Estates played solid throughout. Didn't really do anything too noticeably wrong with the hole layout but also didn't do anything that I felt made it stand out from your typical course. Standard, basic tee-to-green game but the greens seemed to bring out the worst in me. The lack of green fringe was really weird and made it tough at times to tell where the fairway ended and the green started. I also noticed on nearly half the holes that bits and pieces of green grid appeared on the fairway around the green. Not sure if this was due to the lack of fringe or something else but it really didn't look good.
Otherwise, I really liked the look of the course. It really felt like the course was built to be a part of the natural environment instead of the environment being made to suit the course. Planting really seemed to help build this natural feel. I even liked the little things like nice use of fencing. Unfortunately there were a few times where I felt the cart path was too excessive and took away from the look. Around the clubhouse at the beginning and middle of the course there just seem to be cart paths going here, there, and everywhere.
Overall I'd say average in playability/fun, very good in planting/environment.
The Hunters Course was also a solid round of golf that did worked well but didn't do anything too special. I liked the use of the creek throughout the course and that the typically narrow, winding fairways really suited the creek theme. I thought hole 4 was particularly nice looking with the water framing the left side of the fairway and then meandering off into the woods behind the hole.
Sadly, aside from the creek the rest of the course was featureless. Almost every hole featured a long, empty, flat stretch of rough between the tee box and start of the fairway. Most of the fairways remained fairly flat and beyond trees there was little to nothing added along the course to liven it up a little. The potential was there with the creek based course to add a lot of little extra touches to it but unfortunately that opportunity wasn't taken.
Another average course in playability/fun but its' lack of planting really hurts it and leaves it as little more than average for me.
Generic Scoring: Nenestin - 7.8/10 Hunters - 7.1/10
Winner:Nenestin Estates G.C.
Judge 2: Comments coming at a later time. Winner: Woody Creek

The Golf Course @ Oxcross vs The Hunters Club @ Woody Creek
Judge 1: The Golf Course @ Oxcross vs. The Hunters Course @ Woody Creek
The Golf Course @ Oxcross Pros - Realistic Feel Gorgeous Planting behind fences Grassy areas well done Solid Bunkering Nice planting around the water on the course Excellent Terrain work in the background with the hills Course plays nicely
Cons- Greens a bit small for multi-pinning
The Hunters Course @ Woody Creek
Pros- Hole design is really good.. Loved the fairway design.. Seemed like each hole was designed the same way in the fairways but they were nicely done... Good planting on the course but seemed limited Fun course to play Placement of water hazards nicely done
Cons- Small greens for multi-pinning Cart Path not completed Some bunkers a bit shallow A few fairway bunkers were flat and totally hidden from tee box view Areas around water needed some grass/planting especially the lake on #5 1st cuts of rough uneven in areas.. Wider is some places than others..
Winner = The Golf Course @ Oxcross
Judge 2:
The Golf Course @ Oxcross v The Hunters Course @ Woody Creek.
Oxcross looks and feels like a golf course from the very start. It's always good to stand on the first tee and think to yourself that this is a course that can be played in real life. The course flows really well with top class routing to add to that real feel. Line of sight from the tee are generally clear, with a good view of the fairway and any hazards it may contain. The planting is also well done but from time to time, there is rock work that seems a little bit out of place, usually a individual rock here and there that does not seem to fit in. The pin positions are good as the need to be for a firm course, there is never a issue with rolling the ball close, some greens are on the smaller side which could make some holes play similar with multi pinning. The green have no extreme breaks but can be deceptive with subtle breaks, so while the course can look easy at times, it can catch out so care does have to be taken. No hole stood out from the rest for me on this course but also no hole made me think meh, all 18 holes are solid, with enough variety in hole type and length to make my various play thoughs fun with out boredom creeping in. Overall a strong course with very little wrong from a playability point of view.
One thing I noticed early on The hunters course, was stretches of empty land between the the tee and the fairway which visually took a little away from what are well designed fairways that twist and wind their way around the contours of the creek bringing tee shots where attention really has to be paid. Speaking of the creek, to me that was a stand out feature of the course, even when not in play, the water work here is visually top class. With the course seemly cut out of a forest, it does limited the use of planting outside of trees which has both good and bad points, overplanting here would have seemed forced and taking away the natural feel of the course, on the other hand, some holes can feel visually similar.Hole design itself on Hunters is also very solid, like Oxcross though, some of the greens are on the smaller side which makes multi pinning a little bit more difficult. The greens themselves are fun with enough movement to challenge wayward shots, without out causing frustration, very playable. A solid course, fun to play, playable in all conditions.
Now for the hard bit, I played both courses multiple times in varying conditions, both play well, both are tour worthy all be it at different difficulties. I gave both course a 8 in game but In the end though, Oxcross sneaks the win, just that little bit more variety in play to give it victory. A close match up and credit to both designers for two solid courses.

Do Group D proud! You still need to pin your course up, Chad. It's a very good course and will no doubt be used on tour down the road. The scoring on this entire group was CRAZY close, so nothing at all to hang your head about, brother. You're putting out some really good stuff these days, and can't wait to see what you have for us next.

Congrats Gents. We should take pride because from my view this was the toughest/closest groups in terms of all around talent. I also would like to take the time to recognize our judges, I know there's been groups where the judging has been criticized but I didn't think a single comment was unfair, inane, or flat out wrong.
Hopefully my competitors can say the same. It's been a pleasure gents.

Oh well. Good luck, Scampi in the next round and we'll done, Chad, on a fine course.

I agree as well.Thought it was fair and well judged although I have no idea how a Titans symbol anywhere could be listed as a "con" . Probably a deadbeat Jags fan. Would've felt bad though if it ended up costing you a point!

I think it's pretty safe to say that non-playability items like Titans logos in the range have zero impact in scoring
