Iditarod Golf Course, Ruby, AK vs Silverwolf Lake & Hills Club (Final)
Judge 1: Some thoughts on Silverwolf vs Iditarod
Silverwolf
Clean country club look off 1st tee, looks good. Tough pin on 1 with green speeds. I landed on upper tier, fed perfectly, missed hole by inches on the way by and ended up 30 ft away. Hole 2 is not great. Into big headwind 2nd shot is 225-ish with 8-10 yds of green, that runs front-back. Also bumpy fairway that fills screen. Could be smoother. Hole 3 was not a favourite. Almost have to play it in 3 shots to be safe. Fairway on left by green is a bit odd. Hole 4 very nice look. Bunkers clean. Hole 5, very nice looking, but NO safe layup. No CC level player would enjoy. Hole 6 grass growing out of retaining wall, but wall itself is well done. Do not think big sculpting on #7 paid off. Looks unnatural. Hole 8 another great look, but green a little too wonky for that approach. Again a CC players nightmare. Hole 9 huge circular fairway bunker. Fire it into the sun. Looks added last minute and is flat and boring. Rough to green transition, bad. Green design, not great. 10 another no-layup hole. Need to offer options. 11, didn't really enjoy the Look at a bare cliffside and stairs. Some of the best views robbed by elevation. Double greensβ¦.same shape! Very shallow for a long uphill shot. #12 layup area is narrower than driver area #13 better risk reward hole here. Rough by split fairway near green looks wonky though. 14 not bad but green a little extreme #16 simple but nice Don't mind look on 17 but cliffs are kinda unexciting Hole 18, if you can't figure out how someone would easily walk this fairway, it's probably too fantasy. If you're going to use paths, have to make it walkable. Green texture around bunker very clumsy.
General - some very nice looks off the tee, some fun tee shots, some greens with nice slopes to use. - sculpting needed work. Cliffs were a bit up-and-down, lacking pizzazz. Fairway bunkers pretty flat. Greens could be massaged some. - planting was natural looking and well-done. - hole design was a bit of a mess to be honest. A lot of holes without easier to hit lay-up options. greens were mostly punishing, a lot running away from hole. - overall look changed quite a bit throughout round. Started country club esque, ended mostly huge elevation fantasy-esque.
Iditarod.
Appreciate the minimal but clean look. Good design with wide layups early. Plays well for firm conditions. Hole 3 maybe a bit too tough. Drive is very hard, left with near impossible shot if layup. Hole 4 also very difficult. Like hole ideas though. Love look on 5. Hole plays well, nice little island before green. Planting should be mixed up a bit on 6, kinda one-note throughout really. #7 nice and plays well No Safe way to lay back on 8 Loved look on 9 but get rakes outta there. Both courses had them, these ones were more intrusive. Drive on 10 very tough. Maybe flatten a bit. Fairway on left on 12 looks a mess and provides no angle of approach. Just get rid of it. 13 bunker sculpting could be more consistent. Sculpting on 14 could be better. Fairway I'm OK with, bunkers in middle, don't look great. Not sure about fairway right up to cart path on 14. Looks odd. Another great look on 15 tee. #16β¦.uhhh. clunker hole. Red juicy stake to look at. 3 tees, all same distance. Just not good. Loooove 17. Great design, nice look 18, good, tough, fair finisher
General - consistent look throughout, very clean with mostly nice sculpting -Planting was good, strategic trees, but no real eye-popping planting - hole design was good, played well with firm - unfortunate a couple holes just fell flat. 12, 13, 14, 16 a bit of a slow stretch.
A tough matchup, but Iditarod wins for overall look and playability. Silverwolf is a pro tour test that is just short of being nice enough for the pro tours, while Iditarod is a more fair test for all levels and I think could host a tour event.
Judge 2: Overall I am going to agree with ************ on Silverwolf.. but I think Iditarod has some serious potential. The absolute best winter course I think I've ever played. I think Iditarod can be multipinned, and softened for the lower tours.. but it plays well enough to host a pga or euro event.
Iditarod wins.

I didn't realize we were designing for CC (or any other) levels. Thought it was just an open design contest. Oh well.

I didn't realize we were designing for CC (or any other) levels. Thought it was just an open design contest. Oh well. It is open difficulty.I did, however, mention a few times that whatever your level of difficulty is it needs to make sense. You would have gotten much better feedback had there been more than 2 courses in the group. Please don't sour grapes this as you're only seeing 2 opinions instead of what others have to say about the course. You'll get a better sense of what they are seeing in the next round, Jimmy.
