This isn't really surprising considering both Sony and Microsoft are putting processor and memory into these consoles that are comparable with the hardware PCs had 3-5 years ago. Add to that the GPUs that Nvidia and AMD has put out in the last few months and there simply is no comparison.
Microsoft's Senior Director of Product Management & Planning, Albert Penello, recently spoke with The Guardian about PC gaming's renaissance, and the huge leap in technology happening on PC. Penello said:
"In the last five years, there's been a real renaissance in PC gaming, and that's happening with NVIDIA and AMD investing in really high-end performance - to the point where PCs have eclipsed consoles much more significantly than ever before. In fact consoles used to lead PCs and it would take a while for them to catch up".

Fortunately PC gaming will never fully overtake the console due to lack of convenience and the cost.
Personally in the last few years I have had a top notch PC and the latest consoles but after experiencing both do I really want to spend all the extra money for minimal extra game play quality? Not for me. Console any day for me maybe not for quality but definitely for value for money

Not surprising at all. I gave up on consoles with the last gen, and even then I bought a XBox 360, sold it, bought a PS3, sold it, and made one more attempt with the PS3, sold it again. The consoles haven't had much of a unique draw the last two generations, they're basically gimped, walled garden versions of PCs. The Playstation 2 was the last console I really enjoyed. These days I only game on PC and Android, and emulate the retro gaming stuff I enjoy on those platforms. Heck, my PC blows the consoles away anyway. I'm playing this game with great settings at 1440p. That just wouldn't happen with a console. So glad to have a great golf game for PC, now if only I could get a decent NFL licensed football game.

consoles used to lead PCs and it would take a while for them to catch up I don't think that has ever been true, except perhaps if you were to view 'PCs' as the average middle of the road system rather than gaming rigs.

If you're on a budget a gaming PC isn't even an option. Console all the way.

I suppose that depends on your budget. You can get a pretty nice PC for 300-400 dollars.

I guess it depends what game you play. I grew up playing games like Civilization on PC. There is no way a game like that could be played on a console as it requires too much computing power nearer the end game. First person shooters sure. Sports, yeah, but they almost always look BETTER on PC.
This is why companies like Sony and Microsoft get the "console only" releases, because if they didn't, they would lose period.

I don't doubt for a minute that games look better on PC than a console, plus some games are just suited for PC, but there are 3 main reasons I would always buy a console.
1. I can buy any game for the PS4 and know it will run. I don't have to read the spec on the back of the box to see if my graphics card is good enough, whether I have enough CPU power etc. You just know it works, end of. I could buy a PC today and pretty much have an out of date spec tomorrow.
2. Cost. Consoles are an absolute bargain these days.
3. A good game isnt judged by graphics for me. I want a great playable game first and foremost and graphics are secondary to that.
Saying all that, I haven't seen TGC on PC and if I did maybe I would run off and buy a PC, but I doubt it and am very happy with my PS4.

All three (PC, PS4 and Xbone) have their respective advantages. I was always a console guy. Upgraded from PS1 to PS2 to PS3 and PS4. Also still have an original Wii. The PS4 I bought specifically for The Last of Us and Uncharted in 1080P. And those games work perfect for that. Those two franchises are my favorite games ever other than TGC. And you cannot play those franchises on PC. Bought the XB1 for Tomb raider etc. and did not want to wait for it to be released on PS3/PS4. A couple other nice exclusives for that console too.
My PC cost over 3x the cost of a PS4. But for me Steam is rock solid, and TGC plays SOOOO much better on PC than either of the consoles (I have all 3 versions). Plus now that I have made the big investment, upgrades can be had for the cost of or less than a new console as needed. Adn, well it is also a computer that I can do my work on...
Yes I will also upgrade my consoles in the future (but not until PS5 and a whole new XBOX or whatever, skipping the newest iterations that just came out).
As others have pointed out, if the new swing mechanic in TGC2 is going to depend on smooth fluid swings, then the frame rate issues with those consoles is likely to be really problematic.

The beauty of pc games is that you can adjust settings to get your game to run very smoothly, medium settings normally look better on pc than consoles, with a much higher frame rate. This game really looks amazing on pc, I have it on PS4 and I really notice the much lower frame rate

It's a shame that the PC doesn't really get any relevant exclusives.

It's a shame that the PC doesn't really get any relevant exclusives. I don't see how this is the case. Pretty much any 4x game like Civ, Starcraft, and the like will either be PC exclusive or gimped on consoles. There's Star Citizen, Mount & Blade, Team Fortress 2 (yeah, it came out on consoles, but a terrible, crippled version of it), Divinity: Original Sin was a PC exclusive for a long time before finally releasing on consoles. Many games like Skyrim, GTA, and so on are superior on PC due to mods, graphics, and better framerates and gameplay, and overall multiplatform games nearly always outperform on PC. Plus, on my PC I've got access to the entire backlog of the console catalogs from the NES all the way to the PS2 and Gamecube/Wii via emulation. I really can't see the drawbacks. Okay, I didn't get Last of Us or Uncharted. Whoop-dee-doo.

Yeah PC has some great exclusives but not many and that's only my opinion. Personally I prefer playstation's selection more than any other platform. The best exclusives.
