I've been wondering for a while now what the graphics settings actually matters....and I just can't LOL Is there some kind soul that could maybe explain to me how they work? Like for instance if a course has say 1000 trees on it and my HI-DEF TREES setting is cranked up to 3000 am I wasting resources? Is there a limit to the trees which one can plant? And then what about the "tree distance" (or whatever) option?? Need some enlightenment here pls

The hi-def trees sets the maximum number of trees that are drawn in high resolution. The tree distance sets the maximum distance at which trees will be drawn at high resolution.
Let's say you have your max distance set to 1000 yards (very far) but number of trees set to 20 trees, then the 20 trees closest to the camera will be drawn in high-def. If there are 1000 trees within 1000 yards, your GPU is still only going to draw 20 of them in high-def.
Conversely, let's say you have the number of high-def trees set to 2000 trees and the max distance set to 100 yards. Let's say there are 5 trees near the tee box and there is a forest behind the green. Those trees behind the green will look terrible until the camera approaches the green. It doesn't matter that your max number of high-def trees is set to 2000 because they're more than 100 yards away.

He pretty much nailed the explanation. Simply put the settings you are talking about are all about how "pretty" you want things to be. They offer nothing to the actual game and is more about the artistic value. Having the settings up higher than your GPU can render can cause stuttering. I have turned down several of these settings because I really don't care that much about the trees or water and more about the ball flight and the hole.

Also I know Brighttail would've answered my topic Thx bud! So guys I'm basically wasting resources with 3000 hi-def trees...no way in hell a single hole would have 3000 trees. I think something like 300 hi-def trees and 600 yards "draw distance" should get it done - then I can crank up the detail bar to maybe 3 (currently at 2).

It is personal preference.
