Well for all you naysayers that think I complain too much. I'm sorry, but I really do try to help HB make this a better game. I have been talking about a bug where a putted ball on occasion will seemingly go right over the hole as if it wasn't there, especially on uphill/downhill slopes. Some said i was hitting it too hard but I felt it was something different.
Today Anthony confirmed it is a bug in the code and it is one that the programmers don't feel that they can fix under the current Unity 4 engine. They do believe they can fix it in the new Unity 5 engine which they are looking to move too in 4-5 weeks.
For those who are curious here is what he sent me:
Hi mate,
I was actually looking at this stuff today. Especially the putting issues that you've spoken about in the past.
We've found a collision bug with unity 4, which is very much like I told you about before where the ball should fall, but doesn't because of the way it calculates collision.
What I've found is that it's for prevalent on cups that are on slightly uneven ground.
Talking to our physics guys they think it's unfixible in unity 4. But look out for an announcement in 5 weeks time about that.
Anthony
This has been happening for me since the December patch which matches up with the timeline. Basically the ball doesn't always calculate correctly when it 'collides' with the edge of the hole, be it the front, back or side. The specifics of when it occurs and when it doesn't I'm not sure but I'm happy that Anthony found the bug I was seeing, could replicate it and is looking for a fix, hopefully in Unity 5.
So sorry for sounding like a whiner but I'll tell you it sure feels good to be vindicated. I'm sure this problem isn't the full reason for my woeful putting of late, but it explains a lot, especially when I hit a good putt and feel 100% that the ball should go in and it just rolls over the hole as if it didn't exist.
Lesson of the day, report the bugs. HB does listen and does investigate things we see to make the game a better game.
