Hello, new member here, loving the game and the TGC tours set up.
About to start my first tourney, but before I begin - I've read the rules regarding use of chip shots on the green. If your ball is in the rough just outside the green its ok for the chip shot.
What if you are just outside the green but on the fairway? Im guessing that's allowed but wanted clarification before I start.
Always seems a problem in golf games , the chip shot being overly accurate in these situations.

My understanding of the rule is:
It is OK to chip if you are in the rough or bunker, on the fairway, or on the fringe. If you are on the green with clear site of the hole you must putt. However on irregular shape greens, if you are on the putting surface but your line to the hole is blocked by fringe, fairway, rough, or bunker you may chip over the obstruction.

Im guessing that's allowed but wanted clarification before I start. Always seems a problem in golf games , the chip shot being overly accurate in these situations. As for me, I have practiced the rule of "if it's (the ball) is on the green, then you're putting". If the ball is on the fringe, then you chip (or pitch, or flop). The only time where another club is allowed to be used on the green is the use of the driver during game rage-play. In accordance to PGA Tour Rule, Article 64, Section 15, it states: "Whereas the putter must be the only allotted club used on the surface of the designated putting green, exemption shall be granted to all parties invoking 'Game Rage-Play' statue, allowing the use of driver on the surface of the designated putting green. Be it as such that said parties invoke described statue, and damage is caused to any and all property, then responsibility for such damage is assumed by the course designer". I hope this helps in answering your questions. Please feel free to contact me regarding any other questions you may have. "Get me my goddamn driver....NOW!"

Just don't chip on the greens in competition and you will be fine. There are ocassions when you wont be able to reach the hole with a putt so then it's ok, may want to check with a rules official first it's allowed in real life

Do not chip on greens unless your line is impeded by fringe, fairway, rough or other hazard. It's your responsibility to avoid leaving putts that are too long or too far uphill. The official rule is found here, just below the straight shooter policy.
