I've been playing TGC since the PS4 launch and always thought I was decent at it. I enjoy it so I joined TGCTours. I was placed in CC-D and couldn't compete with the -45 to -60 under tournaments. Eventually demoted to CC-E, and to my surprise I'm still fighting against -30 to -50 tournaments. I tend to average about -10 tournaments with some bad ones mixed in. My TL;DR question is what do people do not to get discouraged? I've accepted that I will never actually win, so I guess I'm asking others on my level what they do to keep playing and actually enjoy it rather than just being super frustrated when you post a good score only to see someone shooting a 55 on the same course.

I think I'm the perfect poster boy to answer your question.
I've only been playing this game about 6 months. I was really bad at the beginning and, quite honestly, was not getting much better.
I took Q School and shot +83 and was put into D Class. Quickly I showed how bad I really was and dropped to E Class.
Then I started practicing a lot, especially the upcoming courses. I played them every single day multiple times.
Long story short, I am going to be earning my D card this week with a sponsor's exemption into C class.
Now, I don't know if I'm going to be good enough to compete in C class but I do know that at one time I was in danger of dropping into Z Class. Trust me, I was bad. Yes, a new controller has helped a lot. My old XBox 360 was really shot. My new XBox 1 is much better.
But what really keeps me from getting discouraged is remembering how much I love this game and love the competition. I've gotten to a point where I honestly don't care where I finish as long as it's not Z. LOL. Anything over that is gravy. I'd be content being a D or E classer as long as I'm still playing. Video golf, going back to the 80s and all the way up to PGA Chamopionship around 2007, has always been my favorite PC game. That's not going to change.
So go out there and just have fun. Practice as much as you can (especially each week's course before it goes live) and you'll see you'll get better.
If I can do it at age 58, anybody can do it.
Good luck!

Personally, Barrett, I think first of all you should decide whether you want to compete and crawl up the ranks or just "play for fun". If you decide you wanna compete (I think you will ), then the first thing to do is learn a little bit of the math behind the game and get some data - I can show you mine, you can try to apply it and eventually you'll come up with your adjustment Then you need to start playing the game a lot more. A ton more. Not only practicing the tourney courses but as much courses as you can (there's a TOP 50 here on the forums with plenty of beauties to chose from). Finding yourself in varied situation you'll learn how to tackle hazard-shots, shaped-shots, approaches on elevated greens... From there you can focus on your weaknesses - i.e. putting, rollout control... just keep asking on the forums (even here in this topic) and someone will answer. Also search in the Driving Range section and you'll find a ton of info to start "elevating" your game. Let us know ^^

Barrett, listen to Andrea. He helped my game a ton, especially with approach shots and rollout, something I never really took into account before. That one tip alone has improved my scores.
There is a lot to learn to become really good. I'm still learning and have a long way to go.
But if you put in the effort, I believe you can do it.
What I can't believe is that I'm actually saying that. LOL.

Is there a thread about how not to throw your controller through the screen?

I'm 63 years old and one thing I've learned in my time is no matter how good you think you are at anything, there are always others that are better. It is just a fact of life. I play TGC by feel just like real life golf. Trying to use math equations would take the fun out of it for me. Just do the best you can and enjoy the game for what it is. I'm currently in CC-E and to be honest that is where I feel at home.

Lots of great advice already given to you but thought I would share my story. When I first started to play this game, which happened to be at release I was just ok at the game. I didn't really play a variety of courses as it's tough to search and just played the HB ones here and there. Via Twitter I discovered TGCTours and thought it was a fantastic idea, thinking I would be amazing and be a pro etc etc...boy was I wrong. I couldn't even shoot par at Q-School and believe I started in CC-A. I could be wrong and it might of been B. Anyway, I played poorly finishing near the bottom in each event, I knew that I was in too high of a class and thought it might of been Q-School that placed me wrongly. I dropped lower and lower down to CC-D. I then took several months break off the game not for any reason I just lost interest. Before firing the game back up late last year again after probably around 6 months off or so. I kept playing and went out each tournament with wanting to win in mind. I set small goals such as finish top 25, and then one week it all clicked and I won in CC-D. The next week on exemption I played well and gained exemption to B and then again to A. Within several weeks I had gained my B card. So I guess it's just shot setting goals and targets that apply to you. Also play as much as you can in terms of competitions that are set up on this forum. People have separate country clubs, Xbox/PC/PS4 match play leagues, World Cups, Stableford Tournaments, Bracket Knockouts and I can honestly say by competing in all or as much as possible that you'll expand your experience and knowledge of different types of courses and conditions and your game will drastically improve. Even if you're not good enough to win things. I took part in the World Cup qualifying, I won't qualify but played for the experience. What I'm trying to say is for me just playing the TGCT and then having nothing else to play for a week doesn't work for me. For me to concentrate and improve I need some sort of reason for competition. So by entering these different formats of play I have a reason to try and play well all of the time. I'm no professional and only hold a CC-B card but I'm gradually improving, I know my weaknesses so I try and work on them but I do that by simply playing more. You've got to enjoy the game and find the line between the two.

Thanks for all the posts guys. I really love this game as it allows for virtually infinite courses to play. I don't think I play enough to really be competitive. I've watched countless videos of people explaining their shot math and how they compute putting, shot percentage, etc... Never really made sense to me so I just wing it. Its amazing how close this mirrors real golf, have a few bad holes and the frustration sets in and I can't play for the life of me. I guess the biggest thing for me is to just have fun and enjoy the different courses and set small goals for myself to keep it interesting.

I don't use any math and rarely use the putting marker because it makes no sense to me at all. I've risen from Z to A going by feel alone. So..it's possible

I've been playing this game since it first came out on XB1, I started at the bottom and have worked my way up to the Euro tour. I'm not doing well up here I have only made the cut once in my last 7 tournaments, what keeps me going is I still enjoy playing this game and all the different courses. I score the best I can on the courses we play and I've just realised I need to be happy with that, you can't make a difference to anyone else's scores. If you worry about other people scoring better than you it will just make you want to give the game up so my advice just be happy with your scores and if you make the cut its a bonus. I don't play the game as much as I did and that's another factor that's hit my scores there are just too many other games out there I want to play, I have three on my drive now that I haven't even touched.

Do some designing. When I get frustrated with my tour play I'll do some designing.
It helps on a number of fronts: - I find it relaxing & creative; - It gives you an insight into how the courses are setup; and - 25-30% of my design time will be spent playtesting. I can experiment with different shot types without worrying about scores (or the wind - which you can still test in offline mode)
I never practice the tour rounds and I've gone from CCD to CCA.

Jeepers, my personal pep-talks usually help me a whole bunch! If I feel that Mr. Discouragement is going to pay a visit, I just give myself a little chat so I will open my eyes to all the possibilities that are out there for all of us. Here are some of quotes that I have said to myself (usually at the top of my lungs): "You might as well chew your own fingers off if you shank this shot, you stupid bastard.""If you miss this putt it will be one hundred percent proof that no one in this world loves you.""Carrie White was right. They all are going to laugh at you. STOP SENDING THE BALL INTO THE GODDAMN BUNKERS!""Diazepam is the key.""I swear to the Almighty, if I do another double bogey I'm gonna shave my head and give myself a Brazilian wax.""Just think, if you make this shot, you can have another drink."Sometimes when the pep-talks don't seem to be doing their job, I simply destroy my PS4 controller, usually by taking a hammer to it. A couple of times I have set it on fire instead, but that's usually during the summer months. Actually, breaking the controller is a good thing because it gets me out of the house. Our local Walmart is open 24 hours, so I just drive down there whenever I need to replace the controller (or take a taxi to Walmart when I've had too much to drink....I am responsible, you know). Here is another way of looking at it. If you become discouraged and stop playing The Golf Club game, you will just start playing another game because that's why you bought the PS4, to play it. And you know what, you will probably be just as shitty playing the new game as well. So you see, you're just spinning your wheels. Just stick with playing The Golf Club game and just enjoy it for what it is (which is a heart attack waiting to happen). At least you're not alone in this misery. It's three in the morning and you're at Walmart to buy another PS4 Controller Life is good Don't get discourage!

Alcohol helps.
Until you're sober and you see what you did when not discouraged and half numb.
