Hi all, Think I'm getting an optional exemption next week to play up but it's raised a question. My goal for the year on web.com was to finish top 10 in the money list and earn an auto Euro card at the end of the season. Only 1 of the 5 exemptions next week may earn their PGA/Euro card though so 4 would come back again the week after. In theory it could be possible to yo-yo all year between playing web.com and PGA/Euro Tour week to week, never getting that elusive PGA/Euro card. If that was to happen then I would only play in 50% of the web.com tournaments which would really put a dent on the money list standings.
So to my question... Is this why the exemptions are optional? So a player can stay and play on web.com if necessary to boost their earnings?
I assume any money earned in the top tiers does not count towards web.com standings?
Thanks for any advice!
Justin

Great question Driver 8, I was thinking the exact same thing. I'm on exemption for pga cayohoga this week and I am going to be slaughtered on that course it is unbelievably tough and more than likely miss getting a card. In all my practice rounds have been in around +5 so more than likely I won't earn any money then I'll go back to web and be a week behind in the moneylist or is this how it works? Would love to hear peoples thoughts or if anyone could answer thanks :-)

Ideally, if you are constantly making trips on exemption up to PGA or Euro, you're bound to move up eventually. For some, it will be on their first few tries on exemption. For others, maybe more like 4 or 5. But I think anyone that is making top 5 on any week in Web.com consistently and getting those exemptions is going to end up as the top exemption player at some point. I really don't see someone yo-yoing back and forth between the real pros and Web.com more than 6 or 7 times.

Thanks canthititstraight yeah I agree people will get there eventually but as Driver8 mentioned about the yoyo effect, it is possible somebody could be that unlucky and miss out everytime. The question is he's aiming for top ten on money list and so will I if things go bad and I don't make PGA. I was just wondering coz by the looks of it that Cuyahoga course week 3 PGA tour set up is near impossible and it will take a miracle to stay up and if I don't I'll be playing catch up on web

To play devil's advocate: If someone is unlucky enough to make exemption every single time in season 2, but fail to be the top exemption player ever single time, they will probably be the #1 earner in Web.com anyway with the way that the money payout drops off.
Just looking at the week 1 results:
1st - $108k 2nd - $64.8k 3rd - $40.8k 4th - $26.4k 4th - $26.4k
15th $10.8k
34th $3k
70th $0.4k
If someone makes exemption every possible time on Web.com in season 2 (let's say half of 40 is 20 times) and gets 5th every single time, they're going to end up with about a half a million dollars. If that player averages 3rd, then the figure could be closer to a million dollars. I'm fairly certain if someone ended up at over half a million at the end of Web.com that they'd be in the top 5 for Web.com players anyway.

Compare this with the Web.com player that never makes exemption but is 15th place, 40 weeks on a row. That person would make about $400k.

Good point it's highly unlikely anyway with the competition especially throughout the tiers that anybody could finish top 5 everytime. I think great players like smurfblade couldn't even finish top 5 in CCE each week especially looking at that -50 :-) just goes to show how competitive this game is, anybody can beat anybody that's what makes it great

You do realize you get promoted to the PGA/EURO if you play in a PGA event on an exemption and make the cut. You don't have to be the top exempt finisher.

I thought the rule was top exemption finisher, but it seems that I have confused this rule with the CC to Web.com one.

I will throw a wrench in here for week four. Last year, during a WGC event or Major where there was a second "minor" event happeneing, one could not earn a promotion in those minor events. It was told to me by Doyley as I had exemptions for the weeks of the Bridgestone WGC and again another one during the PGA Championship. Now, those fields for the minor events the same week were so small that there were far less than 70 players. We are more active at the moment, so it begs the question if that rule is alwaysin effect for "minor" events, or only when those "minor" events are at a XX field size or smaller.
Something to keep in mind that get exemptions after week two this week. Hopefully Doyley or Tim can clarify on this point for week four. The WGC covers players from both PGA and Euro, so both tours have a "minor" event that week.

This is probably too much work for the admins, but maybe in weeks like this, the minor PGA/Euro events could get filled by Web players (based on money list or WGR) just for fun (eg. no tour cards available, unless a Web player won maybe?).
Just an idea for the future.
