I used a lob shot on the green this week. I wasn't aware of the rule for this (never read that far down in the rule list) but I got a message from another member that told me about it. They said they weren't going to turn me in, but if I feel now knowing it was a violation and not saying anything would be worse.
Not being aware of the rule is not a good excuse. I've played with ghosts in most tournaments and seen this done a number of time (with mixed results). I've never actually used anything but a putt before on the green. I don't recall the exact situation, but do remember a very long putt where I didn't have any slope lines for the first half of the putt and being right on the fringe area. And I remember managing a par out of the mess.
I don't have a video and I'm not sure the procedure here. I suppose I just email the commish, correct?
Finally, I wanted to say sorry to everyone. It wasn't my intent to skirt the rules or cheat. I really enjoy playing on this tour and the members, so please accept my apology.

Cool deal.. That is what golf is all about. Break a rule (even if you are not aware) and deal with the consequences.. A true sport of integrity which you just displayed.. Maybe TGC Tours can come up with a way to make everyone sign off that they have read all the rules before becoming a member.. I see a lot of people ask questions and the answers are right there in the rules.. Some folks get so excited they begin and never read the rules.. haha

John "At least that lob shot could have gone in" Yates Great to see this sort of honesty. You have nothing to be sorry about, you made a honest mistake and once you discovered you did, you did the correct thing. Its this sort of thing that to me shows the best in this community. Good luck next week, maybe some good karma well come your way and you will hole a flop shot or two.

I know I have less than zero influence with the powers that be (meaning they see what I suggest and do the opposite) but for someone who broke a rule for the first time and owned up to it in the open forum as soon as he realized it, I'd give him a pass for this. Look, it's online computer golf, not life and death and not for real money. Grace to those who own their mistakes is a good value to instill.

Considering that it's legal IRL, I'm more in line with Irving. I realize it's a TGCTOURS rule, but for a 1st time offense, maybe a 2-4 shot penalty and/or reduction in points is more appropriate.

I appreciate the honesty from John and appreciate those that think we should give people a bit of a break for first time offenses - but it's a rule that we will be enforcing if members take the time to police it properly (which is was in this case).
We do expect all members to read the rules at least once - saves a lot of the heartache later!

Nah, I appreciate it but I don't want an exception. If they start doing that then they have to listen to everyone that breaks a rule. That would be a mess trying to evaluate everything based on if they really meant it, was it a first time offense, etc. The rules are there for a reason.
What if my score prevented someone from getting an exemption or qualifying to move up to that flight or WGR or some other leaderboard? That's not too fair.
I talked to Doyley and we are good. The punishment is I don't get to post a score this week (like the rules state) and have to watch Irving stream for an hour. Last part is harsh but I'll get through it.
I messed up, and intentional or not, I should be held accountable.

Great sportsmanship there! You say you were "right on the fringe area", but you were still on the green, not the fringe, right? Because if you were on the fringe using a lob and be DQ'd, I may have to turn myself in aswell As the rules say "Putter must be used on the green unless your line is obstructed by fringe/rough/bunker, in which case use of a putter is not mandatory." I assume fringe is not considered green and is OK to lob from?

yaters, you are a true class act. I will remember you for your owning up to a mistake before anything else. Integrity goes a long, long way.

I don't think that can happen if you are on the fringe.

Okay, so am I correct that if we are on the fringe, we are allowed to flop? I never have done so, was afraid of DQ. I'm a god awful chipper, so I nearly always putt if I'm on the fringe.

No stipulations for specific clubs on the fringe, anything goes!

Okay, thank you. Wasn't sure if the fringe was classified as being on the green or not.
