I played my first 3 rounds this morning. Winds weren't too bad in my opinion. There was 1 par 4 that was unreachable in 2, forget which hole but I think it's in round 2, since it's the same for everyone I didn't mind though. I couldn't putt worth a lick this morning and missed what felt like a ton of short easy ones. I hit a lot of really good shots considering the wind but just couldn't capitalize with my atrocious putting stroke lol.

Can't remember the hole though. Not a big deal, hit 3 wood a few yards short of green and it was an easy up and down. I think the course is playing fantastic in the winds that got locked in. Love it.

Forgot to note - Winds for me: Round 1 - 7-8 mph Round 2 - 13-14 mph Round 3 - 11-12 mph Round 4 - 10 mph on 1st tee, then called it a day. Love these winds, moderate and very playable. Winds blow at least 10 mph in the US much more than people seem to think. Even a casual day with very little wind, it's usually blowing 5-10 mph at times. I'd rather not see many rounds below 5 mph in tournaments.

Anyone know if the wind update was turned off? I'm playing my third round in 15-18mph winds and blowing opposite of all 3 ghost balls. Hole 1 I couldn't make green in 2 because I had 18mph wind in face and the ghost balls outdrove me by about 50 yds and easily made green

But you'll be grateful the wind is blowing in that direction once you hit the Back 9

My fourth round seemed like it was the same as the ghost balls so I don't know what happened in the third. Sucked playing in such high winds when everyone else had lower but I didn't play well enough this week to contend so it doesn't make a difference

A reminder that the wind updates only lock in the average wind of the round, not the direction. So yeah, there are people who are going to have a headwind on the first tee, others with a cross and others with a tailwind, but the speed should all be comparable.
Thankfully Whistling Straits is pretty fair when it comes to wind directions. There are two longer par 5's that can play upwards of 600+ yards that can't be reached except in optimal HIGH winds and two others that are shorter. Two are best in one wind and the other two are best in the opposite wind. The only downside is there are 2 maybe 3 par 4s that are either reachable in one or leave you a very short pitch/flop. If you got the right wind you can go for them. If you don't have the right wind then they are still a short club away, usually no more than an 8iron. It is these 2-3 holes I think that can cause some scores to swing if a player had the right wind.
Aside from that the course is truly fair.

I thought the whole reason they took down the wind fix the first time was for the very reason that people were getting different directions albeit the same speeds? I have yet to see this issue yet. Not saying it isn't happening at all, just wondering if the issue is truly fixed as far as direction.

I might be completely off, but that was my understanding. We were discussing there could still be wind-waiting for the wind to change to a favourable direction, but that would be a very very long round.

My understanding was the speed AND direction were fixed within a certain parameters (about a quarter of the clock face and 2-3mph in speed)
At the Euro event the week before last i played all 4 rounds on different days and got the same winds as everyone else...

Yea pretty sure direction is now locked in as well - haven't seen anything to suggest otherwise in the rounds I've played with ghost balls.

Like I said I don't mind that I played in different winds but I'm curious why I had different winds and wondering if anyone else had this problem
