I know that TGC Tours had to place the rule in regarding no chipping on the green. I understand why it was put in place and I know that if there's something that can be exploited, you'll have guys that do and don't care that people see them a little weasels with little weenies.
But on a recent tournament course, I had a hole where I was downhill at a steep angle and I had to putt four times to get to within a few inches of the hole without it rolling all the way back down. Now, I suck, but even that's not fair for a guy like me.
And today I saw a guy on a user-created course that had a 160 foot putt. 52 yards. Hell, some NFL punts don't go that far. Canuck's drives in real life don't go that far. So forcing someone to putt from there is a little bit unfair to them.
So I have a compromise I think would work for playability, would be more of a benefit to the weaker/newer players to become more competitive and allows TGC to keep the cheaters at bay.
The rule will be revised to read: There is no chipping permitted when the game says you are on the green with the exception of any time you are outside the green's grid box.
Since we can review any round, it would be easy to check this...and let's face it...if someone sees someone chipping when they have the grid box, they'll report it.
I think this is a compromise that not only makes it more fair all around I think it would also enhance the tournament play of TGC.
Thank you for your consideration.

I'm fine with what it is right now.
I'd say the grid box is not big enough to make chipping from outside of it acceptable on greens.

I wouldn't agree with this, its all part of the game. Look at some of the putts people had at The Open. Spieth putted of the green from 40yds. As for putts up or downhill there would hopefully not be any courses selected that would have unreasonable putts on them.

(writing names down on death list) Great comments guys! Keep them up! Andy, I know what you mean about courses not being selected with unreasonable putts, but the guys can't look at every putting angle on every hole. I've seen two in two weeks. Others in another thread mentioned seeing a few. So that's the genesis behind my posting this. Some kind of compromise to make it fair on everyone vs. now when it's a benefit only to the top players who are around the pin almost every time.

If you crack the door open, someone will kick it down, better just having an absolute bar IMHO. I like the current rule.

I wouldn't be against allowing chipping but not allowing flopping. Maybe have a distance limit like 50 feet or something?

I think it would have to be about 35-40yards before chipping is allowed. But at that point I think it is okay.

Yeah, it's really a no flopping rule. I don't think anyone would get an advantage chipping.
Green grid is too small though. Maybe if putt length + elevation in inches > 100 ft. Then you could flop or chip.
It should only be an option if there's a chance you wouldn't reach the hole with full power.

You couldn't do this anyway. The green grid is different for you as it turns to face you yet is still square. Therefore you may see a player to your side appear inside and chip when by there perspective they are outside the green grid as it has turned for their view
