Kenzie Pass is my entry into the Dynamic Duo’s competition for 2024 along with my partner Robj’s course which will be published in the next few days. In the heart of the Mackenzie Valley, in British Columbia, Canada, lies a majestic golf experience called Kenzie Pass. This layout is the genius of little known designer Bannister MacKenzie, youngest brother of the legendary golf architect Alister MacKenzie. In his early years Bannister worked as a greenskeeper superintendent in his hometown in England and later in Scotland where he migrated and honed his trade, but the itch to dip his hand into the world of golf course design was always in his blood. Living in his brother’s shadow and shunned by golf critics, Bannister finally uprooted his family in 1930 and made the long trek from his beloved Scotland to a small town thirty miles south east of Prince Rupert, B.C. where he found the canvas for his masterpiece, Kenzie Pass. Wanting to make his own name for himself in the golf design world, Bannister went away from template holes and traditional design styles of the day his infamous brother had mastered. Here you will find just great holes gouged and carved out of the Canadian tundra. Missing Scotland, Bannister smuggled some scrappy purple shrubbery that he lovingly bred through the years and painstakingly planted into his unique bearded bunkers, a feature not often seen on Canadian courses. Kenzie Pass weighs in as a 7,422 yard Par 71, serving up four par 5’s, five par 3’s, and nine par 4’s. Four tees and four pin sets await the avid golfer on slick 171 greens that were tested and designed to easily handle 186’s, so don’t be afraid to crank them up along with the winds and prepare to stick handle your way to a few three putts. Afterall, it is Canada. Welcome to Kenzie Pass.
