Prairie Dunes (L) is a collaborative LiDAR recreation by mctrees02 and metatropic. One of the greatest inland courses in the USA, the original 9 holes (1, 2, 6-10, 17, and 18) of this Kansas course were designed by Perry Maxwell; the course was completed after Perry’s death by his son Press. Alongside Southern Hills and Old Town Club, Prairie Dunes stands high amongst Maxwell’s masterpieces. mctrees02 knows and loves this place well, making an annual pilgrimage there. Building a version of this that plays well in 2k23 presented a number of challenges. The greens are brutal, needing some toning down in places. The IRL contour map of the 2nd green in particular has red slopes all over; there are no flat spots at all. We’ve tweaked it without destroying the intended gameplay. The course has been frequently lengthened in real life over the years to ensure the originally intended shot values are maintained. We have continued this process, adding about 250 yard to the total, most notably on the 3rd, 7th, 9th and 18th. Another major challenge was planting; the holes are surrounded by a plum and yucca thicket known locally as “the gunch”; this changes appearance throughout the year and periodically is burnt to control it. We’ve aimed for an early summer appearance to the gunch. The course has its quirks; that crazy 2nd green (making it one of the world’s shortest par 5s…), trees overhanging the fairway on 12 and the “chute”, a narrow passage between closely spaced trees for the tee shot on 15. Enjoy this very special course. We’ve pushed green speeds to 146 and the pinsets can barely handle going up to 155 for tournament play. Play it in prevailing N-NE (Southerly direction IRL) winds for how it plays most of the year or flip it around to S-SE to experience how it plays when winter cold fronts arrive. High winds are a rite of passage! Photos by mctrees02The approach to the 1st. The heavily sloped 2nd Green. Don’t be above the hole… The short par 4 3rd. Approaching the 9th. The “chute” on the short 15th. The 17th green. A shortish par 5, hard to hold fairway and green. The 18th and clubhouse complex.

(and the routing nerd photo at the bottom is for grovey31) Thank you to metatropic for helping me bring this passion project to life. I've had the file for a long time but needed somebody who could grind out the extensive environment work needed to make this one a reality. Ali's did an amazing job here seeing this through to fruition and his attention to detail with recreating some off course elements really blew me away. The best example is the home left of the 15th green. You dont expect to find a modern design in rural Kansas but yet it is there and Ali did an excellent job reimagining it with our asset packs.

Thank you so much for inviting me in on this project mctrees02. It was a pleasure from the outset. Grinding out that gunch was more fun than it should have been. Loved the challenge of creating a chute on 15 that looked right but was still playable in this video game.

So excited to play this tonight after work. IT's going to be quite the round on Legend / no aids.
Looking through those photos again they might be the prettiest collection of course images I've seen to date for an RCR. Just amazing stuff.

Well an even par round playing Legend / no aids. Those greens are masterful. And Perry would have been very proud of this digital recreation. Well done gents and thanks !!

Only a shade over 100 plays so far. Either no one can find it or no one bought the game. Beautiful course.
