Welcome to Ronin National Golf Club, better known as RNG(C). Nearly every aspect of this course was determined via a random number generator, from the number of water hazards, theme, bunkers, OB, number of tees, distances of each 9, number of par 4s between the par 3s and 5s, the number of special characteristics off the list, the ones that would be judged, etc. The name comes from the fact that it was determined that there would be 47 bunkers on the course and the name fit the RNG acronym. (Shout out to Keanu)
Since the theme was a random generation, I also decided to restrict myself to only the items available in that theme. This proved to be challenging as there were hardly any trees, grass, or rocks to choose from, and even the ones that were there didn't have much variation.
Highlighting a few of my favorite looks from the course:
Hole 6, one of the longer par 4s on the course. Challenging the bunker off the tee will give a good angle into the green, anything hugging the right may require a shaped shot to reach some hole locations and avoid the tree by the green.
Hole 13 is a steep downhill tee shot. The fairway slopes heavily toward the bunker and the forest beyond, so it's important to place the shot correctly in order to hold the fairway. Beware the swales short and right on the approach.
Hole 15 is a shorter downhill par 3 with the largest green on the course. The shadow of the tree rests upon the "valley of death", a deep ridge that cuts the green in two.
And my personal favorite on the course, hole 9 is a beast of a par 5 measuring 612 yards from the back tees. Taking aim near the bunkers will leave you in ideal position to lay up inside 100 yards, where accuracy is then needed on the 3rd shot to avoid the deep bunker and steep slope on the right. Missing the green could easily result in a bogey or worse.
Environment is based off of some Midwest championship courses I've played, I think I did alright in getting the look right. See below for reference.
Enjoy your rounds!
