Just submitted my first design contest entry! I am excited to share it with y'all. It's called Mattituck Club and is based on my experience playing some inland Long Island courses, based most heavily on the Piping Rock Club (where I played my HS golf). I tried to give myself a new challenge and design a course that 1) was not on the coast 2) was with a new theme and 3) was more difficult than my previous courses. NOTE: the game is annoyingly defaulting to soft fairways, so PLEASE change the fairways to firm or very firm before playing. There is a lot of space for the ground game on many holes, and the course will be much more fun and quite a bit easier that way. For the competition, I've chosen the following 4 elements: 1- A par three over 230 yards. The 6th hole is routed over a large Sahara bunker to a green benched into a hillside, which you can use to bound the ball onto the green and makes the hole pay considerably shorter than the yardage. 2- A driveable par 4. The 7th has a ton of strategic options. You can give the green a go from the elevated tee, but you have to choose how much water you want to try and carry. Anything that bails right will be faced with an oblique angle to a very shallow green, over the deepest bunkers on the course. 3: A template hole. I think that Piping Rock, my inspiration for this course, has the best copy of the Redan hole, maybe second to 4th at National. So I decided to use the OG template as my 15th hole. And finally, for 4, I chose three par fours under 400 yards. I think that holes that are just beyond that drivable range (350-400) are the most challenging to design sometimes. In addition to the 7th above, below I have the 10th green (the hole is loosely based on the strategy of 2 at Oakmont, with the most heavily sloped back-to-front green on the course) and the 14th, which abounds with options. The player can try and carry the diagonal hazard, or lay back and hit in a full wedge or short iron.
