There was no eccentric billionaire. No venture capitalists, no well-meaning philanthropist. Mackenzie never came here. Colt never graced this hallowed turf. Vardon stayed the weekend once, or so they say. No, Tollington Heath didn’t feature in any of the early tourist guides. There it sits in an unfashionable backwater just off the A24. Most folk wouldn’t even notice the unassuming small wooden sign at the roadside. But for those who do know… Tollington Heath is a fine place to play your golf.
This is golf in its natural state. Tollington Heath was a Victorian hunting ground… not quite attracting the royalty of the day, but the locals knew it was the place to be… nothing too much has changed since the early days… the original clubhouse from 1907 still welcomes visitors as its always done. The only game now, however, is golf and the hunters come brandishing their hybrids instead of their shotguns…
Here we have 7400 yards of prime golfing heathland… it’s a par 72. Gorse, heather and pine forest provides the backdrop for your round with two natural lakes providing both pleasing vistas and challenge in equal measures. There are no bells, no whistles - just pure unadulterated golf. Setting out on the front nine you’ll find plenty to occupy your senses and by the time you approach the ninth you can glimpse across the lake to the clubhouse sitting waiting behind the 18th green. But that’s not for now - the back nine beckons and 9 more adventures before you sink your final putt and head home with memories of a great day’s golf. Fairways are generally generous, and greens regularly receptive. The accurate golfer will score well, but some lengthy holes will challenge the errant shots. But when all’s said and done, Tollington Heath is a pleasing place to play your golf
