Welcome to Ballowmere; a quaint glacial lake that gives its name to the nearby village and the Manor House at the top of the hill. The public grounds play host to a quirky little course, measuring in at just under 7000 yards from the Gold set up, and shorter still from the Blacks and Blues. The Red tees provide a more relaxed layout, playing forward on almost every hole.
The course starts with a relatively long par five hole, with a tempting diagonal carry off the tee. However, even flying the bunker safely doesn’t guarantee a shot at the green in two, meaning you may have to fight for your pending birdie.
Hole 2 plays back down towards the lake, with tree trouble lurking either side. A drive too far to the right will be shut off from the green.
The first of six par three holes on the course sets the mould - carrying over a portion of the mere to a wide but shallow green. This site sits on a sandy portion of the flood plain, protected from the water by the beachy areas.
The 4th provides the first really good scoring opportunity of the round. An imposing carry over water sets up a chance to go at the green in two, playing into the hands of a golfer that hits a draw naturally.
Staring straight at the facade of the Manor House, 6 is one of two short par fours, again flying over the corner of the lake. Go for it if you’re brave, but missing the green often leaves a nearly impossible chip or worse, a watery rest for the wayward ball.
A case of deja vu might strike on the 7th. Hitting over the fountain may seem familiar, and rightly so as we cross paths with the 3rd. Locals often wait to watch the group on the other hole hit the green before teeing off themselves, hoping to catch a good view of something spectacular.
8 is the third and final par five of the front side. The hog’s back comes into play off the tee, helping or hindering depending on where the drive catches. Too far right and the green is blocked by a tee, too far left and it is out of reach for all but the longest hitters.
12 is possibly the best hole on the course. A heroic par five tempts the golfer with water everywhere, but a definite eagle chance awaits two perfect shots.
A popular hangout for the locals sits just off the 13th hole. The fishing shack sees use all year round, and the well trodden path heading off towards the local pub isn’t lacking traffic either.
The final stretch of holes provides scoring opportunities while protecting par. The short par thee, short four and long three finishing combination rewards accuracy and provides plenty of excitement, as birdies are possible but big numbers are equally likely!
I hope you enjoy your round here and look forward to hearing any feedback! Thank you! Also special thanks to b101 and all the viewers in his stream today for fielding my many questions as I prepared to publish this course.
