A Lidar version of the Chena Bend Golf Course in Fairbanks, Alaska, is now available.
The 18-hole, 7,086-yard, par 72 Lidar version plays at just a bit longer than the actual distance listed on the scorecard. The routing was designed by Jerry Matthews, a former president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, and opened in 1942. Today Chena Bend is located on the Fort Wainwright Military Base in Alaska and has the distinction as the farthest north military golf course in the United States.
The Alaska golf season may not be as lengthy as in other parts of the world, but Chena Bend GC has long been a fixture on the state's list of top courses while also simultaneously being regarded as among the best of the U.S. Military courses. I was intrigued with bringing this course to the community, but when I learned the facility is managed by the U.S. Army's Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation program -- an organization that provides support services to soldiers and their families, military retirees and associated civilians -- I knew I was all-in and would give this Lidar version my best effort.
Situated on the south side of the Chena River as it winds its way through Fairbanks the golf course is at the very least well-named. Many holes, particularly on the back nine, play right along the encroaching river curves. The front nine meanwhile takes the golfer from the clubhouse into the woods rather quickly. I enjoyed reading the actual course's online reviews, including one which said "the trees are almost right on the lip of the (front nine) fairways, and it's easy for your ball to find the base stockade" (the military term for being in jail!).
Course photos are provided below. As always, please replace your divots and enjoy your round!
