Hi guy and gals I have recently created a new course "Wildwood Mire Golf Club". it has been approved by one of the reviewers which is great and unexpected. I was just looking for some advice on how I could take my courses to the next level of design. I am fairly new to course design and I find it difficult to strike a good balance between difficulty and play ability as I'm nothing special when it comes to actually playing the game. I know I did make a school boy error and didn't double check my intended default wind speed and direction before publishing the course. I know you can pick such settings prior to playing but my intended was a North Easterly direction at Medium speed.
I would really appreciate any advice/constructive criticism from other designers, the standard what you think I did well and what needs improvement.
Thankyou
Matt

Nice work, Mr Unit !
WILDWOOD MIRE
1st Right off the bat it’s a likely drive-through scenario with a big wind behind me, and only 300 to an unseen water’s edge. Scouting the approach, the green is fronted by (again unseen) rocks, which leads to a high probability of some crazy bounces on approach shots. The rocks WERE nicely planted and the green played well.
2nd Pretty par 3 ! Thought the #1 pin would be nastier than it turned out.
3rd Another solid hole, with nice sightline to the grassy cypress swamp.
4th Glad I checked the overhead, as easily reachable water on the ‘seemingly safe’ play left of the bunkers. Cool bridge to the green. Really tough par in a stiff headwind (I had 19mph).
5th Love me some split fairway action ! Good hole.
6th ,7th Two more nice ‘swamp’ holes and the 8th are solid and .play well
9th “Narrows’ hole back to the stately clubouse works for sure.
10th Looks from the tee that the back may be a bit more rocky. Can’t wait … but pin 1 here gave me fits. I like opening the back with the short par 3.
11th Okay, my favorite drive look so far. And a helping wind at last … to another ‘yellow’ pin. Too bad I’m not putting like I did when I shot a 63 at ‘Old Brack Links’ this morning.
12th Struggled into the wind here, but thanks for NOT making OB short right here, as I managed to put it back in play and salvage a bogey from my poor drive.
13th Almost drove it, good short hole to make up a stroke (well, on par if not ‘the field’)
14th – 18th Kind of wished for something as nice as the start of the back nine, visually, but never quite got it. Nothing at all wrong with them, but I would have loved some more of that rocky feel.
Loved the bridges & planting, and it certainly isn’t your fault that HB turned the wind up on me. It did make it a must to use all the info I had due to (likely intentional) blindness (and I’m down w/that) on a few holes.
Overall, great course & thanks for your creation !

Thankyou Matt Hi Matt (there really are too many Matts in here), I'll give it a play tomorrow during my stream and post my play through in here. I've done that for other designers and they have appreciated the feedback. Hope I'm able to help!

Thank you very much Nola I really appreciate the feedback. I did think maybe the last few holes were a little plain but I tried to keep it slightly above the level of the water. Some great notes for me to help build on thank you again.
Thank you also ameobi I will look forward to it.

Ok, here's the play through, but I have to ask. Did you take your name from Heskey the footballer?

Actually yes I did, I was playing fifa years ago with my mates. I was England and I kept shouting Hensley is a unit and you can’t stop him. I beat my mate 5-1 and Heskey got 4 of them and since then my gamer tag has been The Heskey Unit. The funny thing is I’m a Man Utd fan and Heskey was a scumbag scouse then.
I take it you are a toon man?
Thanks for doing that video that is awesome I will check it out in the morning as it’s 0330 here and I need my bed.

Why aye, I'm a toon man! Hope you enjoy the video. Here's one that includes my favourite England football chant/song of all time:

Hey ameobi, how did you become a Newcastle fan because your Canadian right? Do you think you will find form to get you out the bottom half of the prem? Callum Wilson is a superb sign for you guys this year he gets goals and I rate him.
So I watched your video on YouTube I really appreciate the feedback. I tried to make options for the player on every hole where possible. I did have the longer clubs in mind but obviously didn’t quite work on Some holes. I play on pro settings and you are correct my driver hits 288. Bunker sculpting I really struggled with I must have scrapped all of them at least once and tried to redo them. For some of the tee shots on the course I didn’t want there to be a straight forward get your driver out and smash it but I still wanted the risk of do I take some off the driver to gain that extra 20-30 yards as apposed to hitting my 3 wood, maybe I need to make it a little more beneficial to the the 3 wood choice. The textures I wasn’t sure on but I liked them as it looked fitting for a wet marshland style course. Like I said earlier the balance between difficulty and playability I struggle with. It’s funny when I was watching I was saying to the tv on some of the approaches just drop it short and let the contours feed the ball to the pin but then that’s because I made the course and know every hole like the back of my hand 😂.
Thanks again for the review I have some great stuff to take from that and will look to implement. Oh “a school boy error” means basically a mistake which shouldn’t have happened as in a mistake a child would make. I know you said check out b101 and Canucks tutorials etc but would you recommend a course I should study to help with the idea of good bunker sculpting?

How am I a toon fan? Parents were born and raised in the northeast, so it's in my blood. We'll be lucky to get higher than 15th, to be honest. Crap squad, crap manager, crap owner. Wilson has next to no service, so he's often left on his own. A good course for bunker sculpting? Basically any of the Dream Team courses are a good place to start, but you may as well look at South Yarra by b101 because it's a sandbelt and there are bunkers everywhere on it. I think he does a fantastic job of pushing the limits on bunkers without going overboard.

I was also born in the northeast Bishop Auckland to be exact. I was once a toon man but when I was 5 years old my entire family (who are Utd fans) went to old Trafford to watch Utd and left me at home because I supported Newcastle in a ploy to convert me. I was in tears as a 5 year old who loved football wasn’t allowed to go because I didn’t support Utd. Low and behold I became a Utd fan so there plan worked.
I think I have played b101 yarra in the past, it’s probably in my favourites.
Thanks jordy

Parents grew up in Newton Aycliffe and Ferryhill. I've been to Bishop Auckland during one of our family trips "home". i think my Dad might have gone to grammar school there at one point - if not, it was another nearby town.
Your family needs a flogging for: 1. Leaving you home in such a cruel manner b) Taking the toon out of you. Sure, your team has won trophies for days, but is it more fun than being part of the Toon Army? Maybe don't answer that...
