Chicago Golf Club by pitt1976Welcome to the windy city. Expect some winds to start your week at this template gem. Green speeds vary from fast to mod and then back, while the firmness starts out soft and then gets firmer as the week goes on. Shouldn't be a tough week after last week... although the greens can get you if you aren't in the right zipcode.

I shot my best scores in the headwind by a large margin and choked it away on the low wind rounds. Frustrating but should still be a good week I'd think, maybe get a promo mark.
And I definitely approve of the difficulty of the greens lately, I didn't have many easy putts out there tonight. The game has been out a while now so I'm glad we aren't getting the calm greens like we were towards the beginning of the season. I know it's a tough job with so many flights and you can't please everyone but kudos from me at least.

Just did a practice round on pin 1 with default everything. Shot -3. Was pleased for the most part with my round. Will be a challenge to top my -16 from Georgia Match Club last week.

I've been in the habit of taking notes and then posting them but most people here probably won't need these since it's a famous course but I'll post it anyway.
CHICAGO GOLF CLUB -70-6928.
Architect: C.B. MacDonald with Seth Raynor. 2K21 Designer: Pete Kohelis
Get your knickers on, straighten your 3-piece suit and old cap, bring your brassies and spoons, your mashies and niblicks and jiggers, we’re heading to the prestigious Chicago Golf Club, the oldest 18-hole course in America. Luckily, Catcherman has connections and got us this special invite to this exclusive club. But really, this is pretty cool – I like the idea of competing in a tourney here even though I’ll get my butt kicked cause every knows the course better than me. LOL Like I said, I jotted down notes again for this week but I don’t think I’ll be able to futher illuminate this well-known course.
This 1800s track has some touches that appear in other century-old works. The large-squared well-shaped greens (many are 30-40 yards deep), the totally curve-less straight fairways, the cross bunkers. The look and play of the style are different than most of the courses we’ve played on, and the template holes are historic highlights. We had a lot of trees last week but now we’re playing on a more open course where neighboring holes snuggling up close. Translating it to this game, this is another course where the straight fairways make it tough to properly angle the ball if ‘fast’ is the tempo. A fade would help straighten it. Like Georgia Match Club, where we are on these Chicago greens is more vital than with a typical place with most featuring false fronts, and other notable undulations. Yes be below the hole or in the correct section of the green. I’m gonna have fun here whether I do well or not – fun to think out the strategies on many shots and then adding in the wind. But I’m nervous with all these spectators watching.
1. 4-450. I may carry an aspirin for these first few holes. The opening tee shot is crucial to alleviating any 1st hole headaches on this long straight par-4 with the first of many big, squared greens. Bunkers border the green on all sides making the 200+ yard recovery shots from the rough even tougher. Watch the deep bunker left that the green feeds towards. Some fairway bunkers have big fat lips that don’t like hybrids – you may need a lofted hybrid or iron to get out of some.
2. 4-481. #1 handicap. Another mandatory fairway find is a major advantage on this long ‘Road’ hole. Landing in the heavy rough will cause migraines trying to search for par 200-240 yards away from the hole. This is the most vital tee shot during the round. 3. 3-219. #3 handicap. A long par-3 ‘Biarritz’ with a bread slice-shaped green with long narrow bunkers guarding all sides. The green slopes from back-right to front-left.
4. 5-549. The tight and long reachable ‘Cape’ par-5 4th is a bit easier than the last 3 holes, but this hasn’t been a friendly golf course so far! Hopefully the aspirin kicks in soon. The green has a severe false front. I’d go for it in 2 as we won’t see another par-5 until the 16th hole.
5. 4-359. The first hole that’s conquerable, the fairway is wider and the squared green has a light middle spine that splits the green into two sides. The right side is the harsher negotiation so be weary of any pins on that side.
6. 4-400. A birdie chance flies along with this easier straight par-4. The principle’s nose bunker sniffs the fairway at the 325-yard mark, so don’t tickle any nostrils-we’re only guests here for the week. You have to be a member to play around with that nose. That big ol’ nose can make the approach blind so don’t get to close to it. It’s flu season that nose can blow at any minute anyway! The backwards L-shaped green has a good backstop for pins on the right side.
7. 3-211.The redan hole favors a draw off the tee hit into the right-to-left sloping green. These mysterious polygon greens remind me of geometry class – also cause the green grid looks like graph paper.
8. 4-443. Land the ball on the left side of the fairway for a better angle. You’ll have an easy wedge into a green sloping back to front.
9. 4-438.The first hole with water and even some trees lining the fairway, this par-4 isn’t too intimidating. The water won’t be in play most times and the bread-slice-green is easy to handle.
10. 3-149. A short par-3 over a lot of water, the green is a big landing area with multiple pockets of slopes and a severe false front. Any chips from the sides of the green in this area will be dangerous and can roll off the green.
11. 4-410. A dogleg left par-4, it favors draw approaches with the green sloping from right to left.
12. 4-462.The ‘Punchbowl’ green is the star here looking like a deep-dish pizza, but don’t forget about all the fairway bunkers on the way to it. The punchbowl is on the right side of the green hiding behind a enormous bunker. The left side slopes left-to-right with a false front. If you land on the wrong section of the green it will leave a deadly lag putt. I think I’ll bring my will with me in my golf bag to this hole in case I land on the wrong section of the green. Remember me when I’m gone. LOL
13. 3-189. #2 handicap. If I survived the last hole, I still have to play with this treacherous ‘Eden’ par-3 with an elevated green that sits high above the surrounding bunkers. The two-tiered green slopes left including the steep ridge and back-to-front. Again, it’s about iron accuracy and where you land on the green that matters most in avoiding bogey.
14. 4-356. The second ‘Cape’ hole is a definite birdie possibility. Watch the bunker on the right side of the fairway cause it can be an awkward distance. The crooked bread slice-shaped green slopes towards the front-right.
15. 4-400.This dogleg right par-4 requires a fade off the tee. The squared green has a mix of slopes but none to harsh.
16. 5-530. It’s about time we got a par-5 geez C.B. Try for a fade off the tee as the drive is facing a narrow fairway with a potentially annoying bunker right. The green has a false front but won’t deter birdie chances often.
17. 4-465. A straight hole with a bread slice green, the bunkers near the green aren’t a factor unless you’re in the fairway rough. The pin positions on the right side of the bread slice are tougher sloping left-to-right with the whole green sloping back-to-front. I must be hungry seeing all these greens as bread slices but I don’t see any concession stands – all these spectators and no food? Any of you spectators have some Cracker Jack caramel corn?
18. 4-425. One more piece of bread, I mean one more hole with a bread slice green, this bread is tiered, sloping from left to right. Recovery shots from the left will be tough, let your safe haven be right of the green leaving a chip uphill.
Well, I hope everyone wears their windbreakers or knickers or Christmas sweaters – it’s gonna be a cold one and probably windy for at least 2 rounds. Enjoy this great choice and I hope everyone has a happy merry holiday time.

I hope that you all enjoy your rounds at CGC. What a great post outlining the holes from williamwes626! This course has been a long time project for me and I'm glad that the greens will be the focus. I typically don't set difficult pins, but some of these can be more testing than usual on the tour version.
Putts can certainly get away from you if you're on the wrong side of the hole. Though the course looks plain, there are a lot of little details that you'll need to employ into your strategy. CGC is such a unique course, considering its location and surroundings. It exemplifies golden age architecture at its finest.
Play well!

Though the course looks plain, there are a lot of little details that you'll need to employ into your strategy. CGC is such a unique course, considering its location and surroundings. It exemplifies golden age architecture at its finest. Play well! A great course. It looked a little easier with each Par 4 and Par 5 than when played. The Par 3’s were a little trickier because of the shape of the greens. I found myself putting from far away instead of chipping as the greens were large and long. If you missed your spot with your approach you had a very difficult 2 putt. Fortunately I was good with my long putts to save my pars. I had 11 pars, 3 birdies and 4 bogies. I missed 2 short birds and pushed one short par attempt to the right. i had 2 bird attempts on 17 and 18 that burned the edges as I finished with a +1 but left some on the table. My other issue was my driving. I think I was about 35% as the some of the fairways are tricky with the angles and high winds. But less stressful than last week with regards to the greens back in Georgia.

Opened up with a -9 this week in CC-C. Tempo was mostly consistent and avoided the sand for the most part. Just the one bogey on the front 9. Pretty happy with that.

C-CC xboxer here.
Putting on fire as usual. Other than last week I think I've finished top 10 in putting every week.
Great start with a bogey free -10 first round highlighted by a beauty of a flop on the par 5 16 for eagle.
Round two was a little shakey with one bogey and 8 birds.
Round three started slow like all the other rounds. Found my tempo halfway through and birdied/ eagled the last five holes highlighted by a 155 hole out eagle on 17.
-28 through 3
Hopefully putting myself in position for a potential second win in the last four weeks and bring it home for the xboxers!!!! Again I credit the beer.

Holes 1 2 and 3 are playing 5th, 1st, and 3rd hardest on the course, what a way to start a golf course. just going through and parring those 3 will be my goal

Something must be amiss with the 2k server. Took me 10 minutes to connect and get into the main menu, another 10 to load the event, then roughly five minutes wait between each hole. I gave up after the second hole, let's hope whatever it is gets sorted out by the evening.

Glad to hear it's not only me.
Been trying to get back into my round for the past three hours but I either get booted our or it's just loading forever.

-11 after 36 in CC-D which is currently Top 15. The front nine has been a grind for me... started with early bogeys in each round and sat around -1 at the turn. It took me about 6 or 7 holes to get a feel for the putter each round. Sounds like the wind eases up for the final 36 so let's see how this goes.

-20 Final score in CC-E. Had a few missed putts that should have gone in, but other than that I was pleased with my rounds.

Looks like I made the cut in CC-E by two strokes. Honestly kinda surprised given how poorly I putted. At this point, my goal will be to just try and get another top 25.
