About as far removed as my Dream Team course as can get, Maurelle Point comes out of a plot swap with rjwils30 . Rob created this amazing plot with some fun restrictions and it was a real test of my ability to route a decent course. It took four attempts, but I'm really happy with what I've got. From the outset, I knew the plot was the star and the aim was minimalism: the planting and hole designs needed to fit, rather than overshadow. I didn't think photos would do this course design justice, so here's a little comparison between the plot I inherited and the end product. Rob's amazing brief is below as well. Enjoy!
Brief: The Coastal Salish Tribe of British Columbia are looking to bring more economic prosperity to a village located on a remote coastal stretch along the pacific ocean. A new road and airport in the area will make the village more accessible to outsiders from the surrounding towns as well as the larger cities. The intent of this project is to create a unique golfing experience reflective of the heritage and natural environment of the area that will attract golfers from the surrounding area and perhaps the world. Much like Cabot and Bandon the intent is to foster a sense of community ownership and pride as well as provide jobs for the community amid the declining fishing industry. The course is also intended to be closed one day a week so that the residents can use the site for cultural, leisure and recreational purposes. Site: The site occupies a stretch of coastal rainforest near a river mouth. The people have inhabited this site for 800 years and have used it both for sustenance but also for spiritual and cultural purposes. There are two totem pole gathering areas on the site, one adjacent to the town, the other along the far north side of the site. Both are of high importance culturally. The village itself is within the boundaries of the site as well as a dock for fishing boats. Several trails also traverse the site to access beach areas, totem gathering areas and the fishing dock. A single bridge crossing exists across the river. Constraints: -paths through the site can be deleted or relocated. Care should be taken to ensure that the course maintains the pedestrian movement through the site to the beaches and to the totem gathering areas and the docks. -clubhouse located in close proximity to the village as it will also be used as an amenity by the residents. 40mx40m Parking lot. Practice green. -course should sit lightly on the land. Trees can be removed to create playing corridors, but only as many as is required. -The bridge crossing must be maintained. no other crossings are permitted. - locate 10 cottages somewhere on the site with road access. -respectively interface with important cultural sites -avoid safety issues with village and road access. -Par is flexible. Create a fun but challenging course that explores the site.

That “course discovered” video is one the coolest things I’ve seen anyone put together. Really fun concept, can’t wait to play it

Easy choice to play this today, considering it is from a legend in RJWils30 and a legend-in-the-making B101. It did NOT disappoint! I'm guessing I'll never see this on tour because it'll be scooped up on a tour level higher than what I play, but it is Tour Worthy 7 days a week and twice on Sundays!

This is a fantastic little course, ran smooth as butter and played wonderfully. The greens are a menace for sure and forced me to plan out some pretty difficult shots onto the greens. The site reminds me of parksville, Vancouver Island, BC where my grandparents live!

This is a fantastic little course, ran smooth as butter and played wonderfully. The greens are a menace for sure and forced me to plan out some pretty difficult shots onto the greens. The site reminds me of parksville, Vancouver Island, BC where my grandparents live! Tbh, if the greens are a menace, that's actually not so much on me for once! Really fought the urge to sculpt anything, so it's just a few judicious flattens and raises on the greens whilst retaining the original slopes. I also haven't playtested as much as I usually would because I didn't want to be influenced by shots not reacting in the way I thought they should. I put a lot of thought into where to site greens, fairways, bunkers and tees, but didn't do much shaping in an attempt to keep that natural, rugged feel. Basically, just tried to channel Rob's design style as much as I could on this one. Whenever I play his courses, I always get that feeling that it was effortless (even when I know it isn't), like the surfaces have just been laid out over random, natural land and then massaged into the wild holes he comes out with. It's not his style, but it's slightly different to my usual and it was a lot of fun.

Given the minimalist approach, two things to really look at: 1) compare before and after on the video and learn to 'see' holes rather than create them by moving the land around. 2) once you've found them, have a look at how you can work the strategy off what's already there and make the most of that feature. I think a great example is that mound in front of the first green, which is the sole defence. It's utterly pivotal in making that hole play well and I never touched it with a brush - just laid stuff down carefully around it.

My putting might have been the best it's ever been in this round and really saved me until my first bogey on 18, and these greens were no slouch either. Really loved this course though. I'm know I'm in the minority when I say this, but I think I might actually enjoy this more than South Yarra, although both will require many more rounds. I love a good oceanfront course and this look was pulled off tremendously. You and Rob did a wonderful job pulling off the tribal vibes along the beach. The river/creek was a nice addition too. Really felt like I was in British Columbia along the coast. Fantastic job guys.

The British Columbia vibes were so damn strong with this one. Just loved it so much. Some of the best views in the game on this course looking down at the coastal areas and the holes nearby. Oh and the golf is pretty decent too Tons of fun and funky shots. A boring course, it ain't. Great work, Ben (and to RJW too for a beautiful plot).

Awesome video Ben. So cool to see how the holes were found rather than forced on the land. I have to try that. Again, you did a fantastic job with this site. I deliberately made it i tight plot with some tricky constraints and you were not only able to make the routing work but you were able to find a collection of varied and fun holes that explore and make use the natural features the site. So many great moments out there. I’d like to see the price tag on the construction of this course because it’s got to the most minimalist in the game. Super fun to watch the course evolve. Awesome work.

Alright then, I'll bring back this thread after bringing back Fairview... it's clear which course is better. Also I really liked the production of that before/after video. No regrets bringing back Fairview though... :/

Finally got around to playing this one and was very happy I did! Excellent golf course as you would expect from one of the best. This course sort of got lost among the flurry of dream team releases and deserves a lot more plays than it currently has. Give this one a go everyone you won’t be disappointed!
