Hi folks Hope you're well. I'm working on a course that is very heavily based on Lofoten links, but ... many of the holes are slightly different lengths and the topography is not the same as the real thing. I think I'll be making some holes longer to try and make them play harder/more interesting in 2K21. I am not using lidar, wouldn't have a clue how to, but I loved the look and feel of Lofoten when I saw it on Youtube, so I wanted to build a course based on that. The routing will be similar though (with some changes as I started building it before even looking at the Lofoen website or Google Earth..DOH! ) and I will try to get the greens to play similar. So at the end of the day it cannot be called Lofoten links as it is not a precise RCR but I also don't want to publish it under my own made up name as some will accuse me of just copying Lofoten to a large extent, I'm sure. So when is an RCR not and RCR ... and what can I call this thing when it's done? Something like Lofoten (based on, not RCR) ..... will that even fit in the name field! Cheers

This is something I've been doing, I just take a real course and take the layout from Google Earth and change bits of the course. I don't know if you would want to call it Lofoten Bay or Lofoten Coast or use a name of a nearby place.
One of my courses Ile Aux Touessrok is based on Le Touessrok on Ile Aux Cerfs so I just combined both names so it wouldn't be mistaken for a RCR.

What Pat said really. I think as long as you’re up front about it and not naming it the exact same then it’s a really cool thing to do.

Thank you gents.
I hadn’t thought of using part of the name and adding to it. Yes I absolutely want to be up front about it. I was worried that it would be frowned upon.
I love using the designer and learning the tools but I struggle to “see” the elevations on a blank canvas. That’s why I like some kind of source material .... to get the creative juices flowing. 😊
Unfortunately I just don’t think there will be enough grass in the game to make the course look as amazing as the real Lofoten ....imagine the plants and rocks we could throw down with the RAGE or Unreal engine.....I think Arctic fury would go off like a space rocket!! 😁
Thanks again for the advice 👍
Take care.

nifty1 luckily very few things are frowned upon here! If it's a fun golf course to play that's all I care about!

Q thank you, that makes me feel a lot better. I know it’s only my 4th real attempt but I think so far this could be my best effort. I’m going to really take my time to try and polish it though as I’ve been guilty of saying “ahh that’s near enough for Rock n’rolll” This time I want it to be a symphony ... or at least a best of Chas and Dave. Haha For anyone that hasn’t heard of Chas and Dave, check them on YouTube... nice bit of Rockney 😁

I'll give you a dollar to design Lofoten Links but name it Augusta National.

There is also the actual Lofoton Links on the game too I believe, pretty sure @andersnm ported it over

I spoke to Anders and he built it in TGC19 then ported it across to 2K21 without changing much. I wondered if he wanted to cast an expert Norwegian eye on what I’m working on but he’s got so many projects to do that he doesn’t want to revisit Lofoten. As mine is not lidar and only “based on” I figured it’s ok to carry on and put something a little different up?

Definitely. Tons of versions of Augusta, Pebble and others submitted in-game and, like you say, this one has its own clear spin. Definitely go for it.

Cheers Ben, I like how it feels and looks so I think I will carry on, it'll be good planting practice if nothing else. I need some advice from expert designers though please. As I started the plot without looking at overheads or their website, I have mistakenly routed the first few holes at the incorrect angle, this now means that the 1st tee is 500 yards away from the club house and the 18th green ... ahh for ********* sake So do I rip up the first three holes and start them again or do I fill in the space between the 1st and 18th with planting. As it's not an exact copy of Lofoten I figured it would be OK to just leave it as is, I'm worried that I won't get the same look, feel and flow if I rip them up and start again. I like Crazycanuck's view on this subject .. as in who cares if the routing doesn't make absolute sense but I would like to hear from others what they feel about the subject. Couple of shots of what I have so far below. Thanks for your time and advice guys

Looks great! Personally, given what you're going for with the 'inspired by' vibe, I'd probably look at moving 18 if you haven't done that yet, or add in another 1st hole and lose a different hole somewhere along the way. Tbh, up to you - it's fantasy so you pick how you do it and what corners you really don't want to cut. Fine to have the 1st 500 yards away from the clubhouse if you aren't fussed (I did that on Greenstone )

I think that’s a pretty big persuader for me if you have done it before Ben 😁
I am concerned that if I try to do some of the holes again they just won’t be as good. I’m not saying they’re fantastic but they are up at the top of my limit in terms of design skill so I think I want to keep them.
I have only laid down up to hole 11 so plenty of time to play about with the other holes yet.
I like seeing the clubhouse when on the course so moving it to much might ruin that too. Man, decisions, decisions, decisions 😊
I think I’ll throw down the 18th and see what “the gap” looks like.
Thanks for your advice Cheers Greg
