I was wondering ....
...as most players will, I imagine, just play one round of a user created course then move on, is there an argument for making pin set 1 the most interesting/tricky (however you want to look at it)?
If most people play the course once and pin set 1 is the easiest, will they come away thinking it was a little boring?
Of course I guess most designers hope their courses will get picked up by a society and several pin positions would be played but I wonder what percentage of plays are one offs compared to society games.
Just wondered.... Cheers

tgctours.proboards.com/thread/25674/pin-set-distributionI always play pin 4 when test playing courses but you’re right, I’ve seen some designers make pin 1 the easiest and 4 the hardest when it should really be blended better. The thread above has lots of concepts and thoughts on this

I used to design where the pins went easiest to hardest 1-4, now I try to totally randomize it. Just more interesting that way. When playing casual rounds, I'll pick a random pin set, like hey I don't think I've chosen pin 3 in a while, let's go with that

I agree wholeheartedly with variety but it's an unfortunate fact that most people play pin 1 on every course, so I usually use pinset 1 to make the course play as closely to "my vision" as possible. If I have one pin on a shelf and the 3 others are not, I likely won't use that shelf pin for pin 1 because it doesn't give the golfer the truest idea of the hole design.
