About a month ago, I decided to look back to my TGC1 and 2 courses to find some inspiration for another design. In the early days, I had designed a course called Golf Club of Pennsylvania that ended up hosting some events. Who could ever forget the Rust-Oleum Championship in 2015?? It's reviews were fine, but there were some complaints dealing with narrow fairways and some lighting issues. By and large, it was a fun track and fit the mold of a Northeastern modern private club. It was modeled after Muirfield Village and Laurel Valley Golf Club.
GC of Pennsylvania was ported over to TGC2, changing the theme from Rural to the much better looking Rustic. It was cleaned up and a few holes were completely changed, so I decided to rename it Laurel Highlands G.C. It also hosted an event, but I still wanted to make some significant changes to it for TGC2019 using some of the new features. The name would be changed (again) to Mountain Laurel Club, but it never got published. I'd dabble with some ideas, but completely lost interest in it. Honestly, I was worn out from RCR's (and a new fascination with template holes/old school design). After finishing Allegheny Trail last month, I have to say that my interest in creation is back. I decided to publish Mountain Laurel on TGC2019 weeks ago under "MLC-do not play" with the thoughts of using its design as a new starting point for something different looking than the work I've done of late.
What came next was a blend of everything I love about course design/aesthetics:
-The contrasts of Augusta's lush, perfectly green turf and vibrant Pine straw
-Elevation change similar to the Carolina Sand Hills region
-Large, steep, grass faced, flat surfaced bunkers
-Meandering streams
-Squared-off green complex geometry
-Short par 3's
-(almost) Reachable par 5's
-Lightning fast greens
Many of these facets were already baked into those 2 published designs from the past. If you've played them, you should be able to see it. The routing is nearly identical, but the surroundings have completely changed. All of the advancements inside the Designer allowed me to build a course that needs no more tweaking when the next version of the game comes out. This routing won't ever be recycled again... maybe lengthened, but that's it.
I'm about a day or 2 from publishing it. Unless I have a revelation in the next 24 hours, it will be called Cardinal Pines Golf Club.
