This Sunday we'll get to see the course, and I can't wait. This track has always fascinated me. And I've never seen a better description of how genius the routing is. thefriedegg.com/routing-the-ridges-seminole-golf-club-donald-ross/There's definitely something for aspiring designers to take away in this article, specifically about how to use wind and elevation creatively.

Interesting read. The aerial photos are both very beautiful and got my wheels turning for a new design project! Thanks for posting this

That's one of the coolest routing drawings I've seen. I took a lot away from my Seminole RCR, I'm still amazed when I look at the overhead and see the size of the plot it sits on and how the holes are fit into it. Loving all the content about it this week leading up to the match, I just wish TGC better captured the way courses like this and Royal Melbourne and others play, where the angle your ball comes into different tilts of the green drastically change how it bouncess and how long it rolls and where it ends up. Fringe in TGC can stop a ball on a downslope, I want settings where you don't need a yellow or red sloped green to run a ball off if you want it to. I want to dial it up where even rough texture will run a ball off into a bunker if it's yellow sloped.

Some of those greens sites are just pure masterclass. Plays great in the game.

Yeah, me and b101 just played a round there about an hour ago. High winds, dawn, and overcast skies gives some amazing lighting a few holes in. Kind of wish I'd made it the default.

Couldn't agree more Petty. On all of the things you mentioned! The routing drawing is very cool and extremely interesting. I love that the overhead gives you insight on where the greens and tees are clustered and then you can match that up with the actual terrain on the ground. The way he used the distinct ridges on the property is genius.
And yes, it would be great to maximize the effects of approach angles and green tilt much more than we can now. It's probably the most important thing of a good design and the golden age guys understood that so well.

It pisses me off when I hear guys wishing the greens were less firm so they can stick there 4 irons. Ok maybe it’s ok. But give us a wider range.

Bob Cupp uses that sketch too in his book, “Golf’s Grand Design”. There’s so much to learn from the old masters. Crazy to think how they did what they did with the construction methods they had available. Of course, that’s probably what makes the designs so great. Modern machinery makes things too smooth. Here a few cool blueprint photos of the 6th hole and green complex from Keith Cutten's book, The Evolution of Golf Course Design. There's an old routing drawing as well that I think is really cool too.

That 15th in the middle of the plot is the cherry on top.

Ive had a work in progress Seminole Inspired course that I have just about done but got bored of. Maybe this will be the kick I need to finally finish it.
