Over the past couple weeks I've managed to put together an island themed course set on a mythical Florida key. This is a big departure for me since my previous two courses were 'track through coniferous highland' themed. Compared to those though, I feel that Barron Key is a lot more 'well designed.' There is more variety than I've had before: longer and shorter par 3's, Par 5's all with an element of risk and reward, more creative design with the layout of fairways etc.
I'm feeling good about the playability of the course, however the look is still a work in progress. I don't know where to start with planting. The theme is inherently more open, and that means I can't 'cheat' as I did before with trees blocking line of sight into area's that weren't planted in as fine a detail. I'm a bit overwhelmed and don't know where to start. I tried playing through some island themed courses to get inspiration, but as much as anything it just overwhelmed me.
As a side note its a bit depressing to scroll through the "Handicap Rated" courses looking for different courses to play only to see five different clones of Augusta National each with upwards of 2000 plays each when a course you've put a couple dozen hours into might break 100 plays.
Anyway, these are a couple showcases of what I've got going so far:
Seven, eight, and nine all utilize this little tidal inlet.
Number five moves along a ridge as you head down towards the far coast of the island.
Looking back up towards the tee on number fourteen gives you a good view of the bunkering and fairway design of the course as a whole.
