I remember seeing someone mention one of the Joy of Planting videos covering the thought process of mowing but I can’t find it now. Anyone?

Don't remember that one, but the principle is pretty simple - try to avoid sharp turns and very narrow areas of fairway / green which wouldn't make sense to mow. Doesn't need to all be super curvy, but smooth, gradual turns are generally aesthetically pleasing and make sense. In short, the fairway shape should make sense and not have too many little appendages. Sketching out a natural looking fairway whilst still providing the options you want so they don't look contrived is one of the parts of hole design that takes me the longest. You want it to look natural, but also encourage people to seek out different sides of the fairways whilst negotiating the hazards and have those look sensibly placed. Easy to mow is IMO a catch all term for 'do your fairways and greens make sense?' Take your time on it; it's 100% worth it. Leaping into my back catalogue as an example of what I mean, compare the below with fairway banking smoothly around hazards, with those 'option' spots fitting with the overall shape. You can hit 2w left, shoot the gap in the middle or fast over the bunker. Three options, but the shape of the fairway doesn't look contrived in a way that makes you think those are the three things I was thinking about: Then we have a couple of horror shows from my first ever publish. You'll see the difference as it basically looks like the greenskeepers were perma-drunk, particularly with the way the fairway meets the green in the second image: This video by Andre (covering a tip from Mayday) is a great piece of advice for transitions.

It may not have been a Matt video. Thanks so much b101. Great info! What I’m working on now is a links course and what I find the most difficult at the moment is the balance of getting the right amount of curve and smooth at the edge of the fairway.

I'm not sure I've done a video on it, but my rule of thumb is that any mowed surface shouldn't be on a crazy slope. Other than that, there's not a lot to it.
