Bald Head is kicking my arse, so I'm working on Newport C.C. when I need a break from the acres of sand. Newport and St. Andrews (NY) are the lesser known and studied designs of the original 5 founding Clubs of the USGA, (Shinnecock, Brookline, and Chicago G.C. being the others) even though Newport hosted the first US Amateur and US Open in 1895. The Amateur was won by some guy named C.B. Macdonald who just faded into obscurity.
The original 9-hole course was designed by William Davis in 1894, with a 2nd nine holes added later. There has been a long standing debate over who designed the 2nd nine, with some believing it was Davis and others believing it was Donald Ross. It eventually made no matter because the course was completely remodeled in 1924 by A.W. Tillinghast and has changed little in almost 100 years. It still offers players quite the test measuring 7075 yards with a par of 70.
bubbadave: Well, that was a thoroughly unenjoyable 4th round in CC.

Demonondalinks: your tempo window for perfect is smaller each level you go up there for making it harder to obtain a perfect tempo consistently

sroel908: Nope, like you said...default is whatever the designer sets the green speeds to. That can be any number from 104 to 186.

sroel908: Exactly, 158 is the designer-set default speed for Pine Lake CC (Michigan).
