WELL FOLKS, IT IS FINALLY HERE: The final 2. This is the match for all the marbles. It will pitt defending champ Avery Vereen, a season 1 Dirtbag, and defending season 1 champion versus upstart Leon Keet, a newcomer in Season 2. At the moment, both players compete on the Euro tour. Leon has gotten hotter and hotter as the season progressed.
The match will be a morning session, and an afternoon session. The murmur at tee #1 concerns the late arrival of Avery Vereen. Leon Keet graciously grants him extra time and off we go.
At hole # 1 both players birdie to get the day off and running. Pars were made by both at #2. At #3 Leon rolls in an eagle while Avery can manage only make par. Leon draws first blood. Holes 4,5,6 and 7 were all halved as Leon protects his one hole advantage. At # 8 Leon strikes again as he birdies and Avery cannot match it as he falls 2 down to the red hot Leon. Hole #9 saw both players make 4 as the first nine ends with Leon up 2.
The defending champ, Avery, if he didn't know before, he knows now that he is in a fight.
The back nine: Hole #10 saw Avery birdie but his smile did not last long as Leon topped Avery's birdie putt with one of his own. Leon remains 2 up. At the par 5 11th, both players made matching birdies. Leon 2 up. At the par 5 12th, Avery rolls in a birdie, but again Leon tops it with one of his own. At the par 3 13th, Leon rolls makes a 2 for birdie only to have Avery match that birdie. Avery is putting the pressure on Leon, but Leon remains steadfast. Leon 2 up. At the 14th, Avery 2 putts for par and can only watch as Leon sinks a birdie putt to go 3 up. Wow, what a match. They then marched on to the #1 handicap hole on the course #15. Both hit booming drives and followed that with precision shots into this tough green. Avery putts first and his putt just misses and he settles for par. Meanwhile Leon, with a scorching hot putter, rolls in ANOTHER BIRDIE! Leon 4 up. At this point Avery is glad this is a 36 hole final. At 16, both players make great birdies. At the 17th par 3 Avery hits one stiff, a few feet away. Leon 2 putts for par and can only watch as Avery drains the birdie to cut into Leon's lead. Leon 3 up. At the par 5 18th, both players (of course) make birdie and the first 18 belongs to Leon as he takes a 3 up lead to the afternoon session. Avery shoots a -9 63 while Leon blisters the course for a -13 59.
The two good natured, but fierce competitors head to the snack bar to get a burger and a drink.

Afternoon session: The start of the afternoon session is a few minutes away. Bill, Dirtbag founder, milled through the crowd and comes accross Les, the other old fart, and asked what he thought about the morning session. Les, in his curmudgeon manner quipped "these guys are playing a game that I am not familiar". Bill wholeheartedly agreed. The morning session saw outstanding play by both players. Bill wonders if the PM session can come close to the AM session. A great day for the Dirtbag league, regardless who comes out on top!
Setting the table: Leon holds a strong 3 hole lead going into the final 18. Bill met with Leon and he said "I am confident I can hold Mr Vereen at bay and take home the trophy." Avery on the other side of the tee looked a little worried but very confident. He was quoted "I am going to go out and give it my all, and see what happens. I hope Leon's putter cools off".
Off we go in the final 18. The first hole saw both players continue their hot play with matching birdies. Leon +3. At the par 4 second Avery hits one a few feet from the pin, makes birdie and cuts Leon's lead to 2. At the par 5 3rd hole, Leon rolls in a birdie but watches as Avery, who hit the green in 2 and rolls in an eagle. Leon +1. Folks, we have a match! The par 3 4th saw both players make birdie again. Leon +1. At the 5th Leon makes a par and watches as once again Avery makes birdie and the match is tied!
At hole #6, the par 5. A confident Avery makes birdie but can only watch as Leon rolls in a long eagle putt and Leon is back on top. The crowd is going wild as they are treated to some special golf! The par 4 7th sees matching birdies and Leon maintains the +1 advantage. At the par 3 8th hole Avery just misses an ace, makes birdie to tie the match up once more. The ninth hole was halved with pars and we head to the final 9 holes with both players showing no signs of cracking under the pressure of this championship match.
The final nine: The 10th hole was halved with birdies followed by another half at 11 with pars. At the par 5 12th, both players just missed eagle putts and both settled for birdie. After 12 we are all tied. The 13th hole, a par 3. Will it be a critical hole? Both players hit the green and Leon's birdie putt just slid by the hole. Avery stood there with an opportunity to take the lead. A 15' slider was no gimmee! The putt rolles in and Avery takes a one hole lead with 5 holes to play. Avery does a fist pump and a Chi Chi Rodriquez birdie 'slay the bull dance'. Avery really has no idea who Chi Chi is. Look it up on youtube. The 14th saw both players make birdies and Avery remains +1. The 15th hole saw Avery make yet another birdie while Leon could only par. Avery +2. Leon who doesn't know the meaning of 'quit' makes a birdie at 16 and cuts Avery lead to 1.
At the 17th hole, a par 3, Avery hits one inside 10' only to be matched by Leon's laser shot. Both players drain their putts and we go to the 18th with Avery +1. This match deserved to go to the 18th.
At the 18th hole, a short par 5, both players hit the green in 2 and have eagle putts. Leon leers at Avery and without saying a word, this match is not over yet! Avery putts first and misses his eagle opportunity but taps in for birdie. Leon now has an 18' to tie the match. A birdie will do no good. His putt was a good one and it heads for the center of the hole but at the last second breaks just outside the hole. Avery wins the match +1 in a Dirtbag classic!!
Leon walks dejectedly off the green but he has nothing to be ashamed of as he shoots a 60 in the final 18 but was bested by Avery's unbelievable 56!
CONGRATS TO AVERY VEREEN WHO REPEATS AS DIRTBAG CHAMPION!

Well I completely fell apart in my last two rounds... 69 and 70. Lost my feel with the putter and had some really off-line shots.
