TGC Tours World Cup of Design
Mission
1) to give designers, accomplished and novice alike, a platform to showcase their work while receiving honest & constructive peer reviews
2) to supply all TGC Tours schedulers with a plethora of tour-worthy courses for use in competition
3) to foster fellowship and camaraderie among the design community
Format
The format of the TGC Tours World Cup of Design mimics a soccer/futbol league tournament, such as the FIFA World Cup. The opening round will take place across eight (8) groups of four (4) designers each in a table-scoring format. Each course will be judged against every other course in its group in a round-robin competition, were three (3) points will be awarded for a win, and one (1) point will be awarded for a tie. At the end of the group stage, the top two (2) courses from each group will advance to the knockout round, which is set up bracket-style and proceeds in a "win to advance" scenario, just like the World Cup. The course determined to be the winner of the final match is crowned the champion of the TGC Tours World Cup of Design.
Groups
Groups will divide the overall field of thirty-two (32) designers into two pools, using subjective metrics decided upon by the administrators, where Pool A will have sixteen (16) designers who have exhibited 'veteran' type abilities with the design software, and may have a portfolio of published/approved TGC Tours designs, myriad course plays on their work, or recent success in other contests in the community. Pool B will have sixteen (16) designers who have proven to be strong, capable creators but either have less published work, are newer to the design software, or less contest experience. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect system, and there will be disagreement by some as to which category people are in, but at the end of the day a hard line needs to be drawn down the middle to make this work. However, your pre-draw status has zero effect on your potential to advance from the group stage or win the competition, because the only thing that will matter during the judging is the quality of your course, not your name. The draw will take place LIVE on the Twitch stream hosted by CrazyCanuck1985, exact time TBD, but plan on very early February.
Judging
The administrators of the contest have chosen a judging coordinator, and a full panel of judges has been assembled to objectively score the given metrics of the contest. During the group stage, different judges that will alternate their assessment of the different the groups. Likewise, in the case of a tie between two courses during the group stage, the first tiebreaker will be the head-to-head matchup in the group stage judging. If that was also a tie, then the two (2) courses will face a sudden-death judging by the panel. Once the group stages are over and the final sixteen (16) courses remain, all judging for the knockout rounds and the finals will be conducted by the judging panel.
Group stage judging will be Saturday Feb 2nd - Saturday Feb 16th 11:59 PM ET
Round of 16 and Quarterfinals Sunday Feb 17th - Saturday Feb 23rd 11:59 PM ET
Semifinals and Finals Sunday Feb 24th - Thursday Feb 28th 11:59 PM ET
Winner announced Friday March 1st.
Courses
Designers are allowed to use whatever theme and difficulty setting they prefer. That being said, keep in mind that difficulty can be subjective with the judges. A course playing too hard or too easy can effect the way an individual judge scores your course. We try our best not to have that be a factor, but to say that it may or may not have an effect on a judge's experience would be naive. At the end of the day, just make good choices. If your course plays tough because of good design choices you'll be in great shape... if your course plays tough because you have a bear blocking the tee box or your greens look like a traffic light within nine (9) grid boxes of the hole, that would be an ill-advised choice.
Stipulations
Betas are not allowed for the TGC Tours World Cup of Design, nor is streaming your design sessions. The logic behind this is to keep the prospective judging panel neutral and not have too much influence from seeing your progress repeatedly. Furthermore, you should not solicit any outside advice for your design, it needs to be 100% your own work. You will be allowed to share work in progress (WIP) pictures if you want to, but lets keep those to the dedicated threads associated with this contest for now. Out of respect to those that aren't publishing for this particular contest, we'd rather now jam up the Under Construction or Completed Courses threads in the general design section because when 32 contest courses get published at/near the same time, it buries threads of published courses that aren't involved in the contest. This contest will be well-publicized, so your work will be seen by the community, we can assure you of that.
Camaraderie
All of the activity in the threads and on streams should be good-natured and ultimately point us back to the mission of these design contests. It's great that we can have a go at each other from time to time and make jokes, and that is encouraged, but let's be respectful. Everybody works hard on their course and has good intentions of making a great design, and the judges also put in a lot of work to make this happen. We can not accept personal attacks on anyone's work, their abilities, or the judges decisions, especially on the forums. Sportsmanship needs to remain a foundational principle of these competitions.
Deadlines
Registration is open now until November 15 or until we have thirty-two (32) participants, whichever comes first. All entrants are welcome regardless of design experience or perceived ability. We understand that real life happens in the background of this game, but that being said, if you aren't sure that you can finish a course on time, please don't take a slot from somebody else wanting to compete. When a course is missed from the group stage it alters the format in ways that make the judging and outcome difficult. Courses may begin to be published by January 1, 2019 and every submission is due by 12am PST on February 1, 2019.
Multimedia
All courses will receive a detailed critique on TGCToursTV via CrazyCanuck1985, and it will be promoted to the community to the best of our ability. It's a good chance to get some solid feedback from the judges and fellow competitors in the community on your design.
Prizes
The grand prize for the contest is yet-to-be-determined, but we'll announce it as soon as possible so that you know what you're playing for (other than being crowned the best designer to kick off 2019).
