The top public course in my home state and it's only a 9-holer. Featured on the FriedEgg blog, the New York Times, and lots of other places. I toyed with this for a bit on console and decided to break down and get a PC version while it was on sale because I figured it would make RCR's easier, and I want to do Royal Portrush and Tara Iti after this. I had no idea how much easier it would actually be though using GhostIt. I laid out the entire course in about 4 hours and even started sculpting on the first hole. I also plan on adding an additional 9 fictional holes of my own design to the actual plot of land it sits on and releasing a half-RCR/half-fictional 18 hole version as well. Thanks to jwfickett for re-igniting the inspiration on this with his article today, and if you haven't checked that out or any other articles written about this course, I highly recommend you do so. A couple screens:

Ohhhhh man, we're gonna have fun with this. Looks great!!! I'd love to help with the fictional holes, as well, if you're open to it.

So I'm not sure exactly what parts of the land surrounding the course the club actually owns, so I'm basically saying everything east of hole 2 within the creek winding through the land. The property lines on Google were showing the piece of farmland to the north between holes 2 and 3 as part of the same property, and I think I can fit a par 3 and two par 4's in there. The other 6 would go east of the course, which would be a tight squeeze, especially if two have to be par 5's to make it a par 72. I'm thinking it will probably end up being a par 71 for that reason, but I'm not opposed to a par 70 or even par 69 if that's what works best. I think Sweetens is okay with being alittle abnormal. Preliminary idea for the pseudo-RCR 18 routing would be: 5-4- 4-3-4-5-3-4-4 - 366 new holes-4-4-3 - 33-36Also might reverse the 9's to end on the long par 4 instead of the current par 3.

So glad to see you take this on. I had been trying the triangulation method for laying out an RCR, but after hearing how quickly you could trace that out with ghost it I think I had better teach myself how to use it!

Download here by clicking "Download@MajorGeeks" at the top. Open the course in Google Earth and measure something. Run the program. Right click ghostIt in the menu bar at the bottom, Ghostit, and then just click Google Earth as the active window and it will freeze it and make it opaque, then go back into TGC19 and measure out that length and zoom in/out until it matches what's on the opaque part. Then try not to zoom anymore as you go back and forth between windows to move the ghosted window as you trace. Wasn't complicated at all, surprisingly.

The greens are definitely going to be the toughest part to stay true to the course. that one looks great! Also, as chance would have it, las night I was invited for a weekend in Nashville randomly in April. Definitely making the hour and a half trip to Sweetens!

Yeah, definitely worth that drive, you're in for a treat. Play the 9 at least twice if you can. And yeah, talking with jwfickett , it's going to be a constant balancing act on the greens between true to life and playability, and I'm kind of using this as a tune-up for a Royal Portrush RCR down the road which will probably give me a similar dilemma. I think we'll slow them down as much as necessary to keep the look, because there's just something daunting about looking at mounds and slopes of that size as you're standing over an approach shot wondering what it will do when it lands. I want to continue the trend of ambitious greens into the fictional back 9 too, with a Riviera 6th/Tara Iti 2nd style green and MAYBE even a Sitwell Park 12th green (pre-renovation) as well since Rob Collins himself said that was one of the holes that inspired him to dive deeper into golf architecture. For reference:

I love that Sitwell Park green. Tom Doak supposedly used it as inspiration for his "Short" hole at Old MacDonald. I applaud your efforts to push the envelope in interesting ways from a design standpoint. Seeing other folks do it makes me less likely to "hold back" in terms of unusual design ideas. I also like your tendency to slow the greens down rather than soften the slopes. Heavily contoured but thoughtful greens are a staypuft39 trademark and he typically goes for speeds in the 145-160 range if memory serves. Good picture of it here, hole #13. What a thing of beauty. I'd post the pic here but it won't let me right click the image.
