MAKA SICHU GOLF CLUB
When a Phoenix real estate tycoon reached an agreement with the chairman of the Hopi Tribe to purchase an area of the Arizona desert that the Hopi people referred to as Maka Sichu, or "Badlands", no one expected one of the most exclusive golf clubs in the country to be carved through the rocky desert landscape. Claiming a membership of only 50 people, all hand-picked by the club's founder, and rumored to have seven-figure membership dues, it wasn't long before the club earned the nickname of "The Tara Iti of the Desert". And while you won't find any ocean views or salty breezes, the golf will certainly not disappoint. ErixonStone This is my entry for the Rookie Design Challenge, hole-by-hole overviews and screenshots will follow.

Hole #1 - "Tutskwa" (Creation) Par 4 - 330 / 349 / 388The course kicks off with a reasonably short dogleg right. A tee shot short of the bunker is the safe play, but it can impede the view of the green some if you get left of it. At 305 to clear, the riskier play is to use the slope behind the bunker to run your drive further down toward the hole, leaving an easy approach into the green. Hole #2 - "Tuukwi" (Mound)Par 3 - 148 / 154 / 169The second hole is a short par 3 that tests players' accuracy. The green is built on a natural mound and slopes away from the pins on all sides, and if the wind is swirling, a par will be more than commendable. Hole #3 - "Suru" (Ridge)Par 4 - 352 / 388 / 427 or 318 / 354 / 393Hole 3 is built along a natural ridge that runs down the center of the fairway, giving players the option to either play from on top of or at the base of it, with the preferable line depending on which of the two greens the pin is located on for that day. The dual greens mean this hole can play as a straight-on, shorter par 4 or a bit longer dogleg right.
Hole #4 - "Ungwa" (Descent) Par 4 - 442 / 452 / 472
The fourth hole is a long par four that plays short due to the 40 feet of elevation change from tee to green. Straight shots are paramount to keep the ball out of the bunkers that line both sides of the tee shot and approach, and the huge green complex has pins on three different subtly-sloped tiers. Hole #5 - "Pooko" (Monster)Par 4 - 268 / 310 / 343Barring a headwind, the giant bunker that gives this hole its name is clearable at 282 yards, but it stares menacingly back at the tee box like a giant mouth eager to catch wayward drives and make birdies impossible. If you don't have the club to clear it, the safe play is hitting iron off the tee to the front fairway, while the gambling player may elect to hit the narrow strip of fairway to the side of it. Hole #6 - "Qatu" (Ledge)Par 3 - 133 / 141 / 159Tee shots played at the mound to the left of this reverse-Redan green complex will trickle back into the center of the green and probably be left in better shape than shots hit directly at the pin. A bunker protects the front right and a severe slope punishes shots that hit on the wrong side of the mound, leaving what would be a miraculous up-and-down to save par. Hole 7 - "Kuuyi" (Waterfall) Par 4 - 264 / 292 / 301Don't let the distance fool you - any drive hoping to avoid the water will require pinpoint accuracy, as the landing area entering the green is an extremely narrow strip of fairway splitting two natural oases. A man-made rock wall hides a pumping system that brings water from the oasis to a holding basin at the top and allows it to run down, creating a water feature that brings some life to the desert surroundings. Hole 8 - "Tokpela" (God) Par 5 - 603 / 626 / 644The aptly-named eighth hole makes up for the lack of distance so far on the front nine all by itself, giving even the shortest hitters a 600-yard test. While the three pot bunkers that players face on their second shot are not in play for the longest hitters, there is a bunker in the fairway on the other side that can't be seen and will need to be navigated around in order to ensure a safe approach into the green. Hole 9 - "Taaho" (Dragon) Par 4 - 425 / 436 / 462There's a Hopi legend that a great warrior shot arrows of fire into the sky and killed a dragon, causing it to crash to earth and be buried in the sands over time. They believe the rock feature that hugs the left side of the tee shot and down the middle of the fairway is the dragon's spine still peeking up out of the sand.

Hole 10 - "Ponilti" (Turn) Par 5 - 487 / 504 / 523It will take a tail wind to get on top of the ridge, but from there it will only be a long iron down to the green. Tee shots into the fairway bunker will almost assuredly send shots trying to clear it backwards, so playing it away from the hole to safety is the medicine you'll have to take should you find yourself in that position. Hole 11 - "Qootsa" (Target) Par 3 - 172 / 181 / 192After climbing the rock feature behind Hole 10's green complex to the next tee box, players get to pin seek on a par 3 over a waste area and a large front-side bunker protecting the green. The green is fairly flat so go at the pin to try and take a stroke here. Hole 12 - "Savikna" (Trap)
Par 4 - 446 / 452 / 465
Accuracy off the tee is put to the test with bunkers dotting the fairway and lining the left side of the hole. The large green complex is best approached from the right side of the fairway, but getting to the correct angle is a challenge in itself. Hole 13 - "Paahu" (Waterhole)
Par 4 - 320 / 325 / 349
A theme of enticing, short par 4's is developing, and with a good wind, this hole is no different. Brave - or unwitting - hitters may fire at the green hoping for an easy chip from the rough, but a downhill chip from the wrong side of the hole could spell disaster and leave you worse off than you would've been playing it safe. Hole 14 - "Hoota" (Bridge) Par 4 - 416 / 438 / 455One of the best tee shots on the course, players hit over a ravine to an uphill fairway, then cross a double bridge to see the downhill second shot that awaits them. Hole 15 - "Hangwa" (Quarry)
Par 3 - 160 / 177 / 197
The signature par 3 fifteenth hole is built in an abandoned quarry. Retaining walls were constructed to hold back the giant stone walls and prevent rockslides, but the water table that was hit and caused the quarry to be abandoned in the first place was left behind as a hazard for wayward golf balls. Hole 16 - "Nuumahoya" (Little Brother)
Par 4 - 494 / 500 / 520Holes 16 and 17 work as a pair, virtually the same distance, but routed in opposite directions. The first is a long par 4 that plays downhill, and if the wind is with you, take a birdie while you can because it will be against you on the next hole going back up the hill. Hole 17 - "Wukonuuma" (Big Brother)
Par 5 - 479 / 509 / 537A short par 5 to make up for the long par 4, and with the wind, going for eagle is enticing, but a shallow green protected in front by a bunker makes for a tough second shot to put yourself in position for one, and if the wind is against you, the fairway bunker on the left could be a nightmare if you find yourself in front of it. Hole 18 - "Hiiko" (Home)
Par 4 - 307 / 324 / 337The final hole is a risk/reward par 4 that plays between two oases off the tee toward a giant green complex flanked by the modern, pueblo-style clubhouse and practice area. Like many of the holes, the ideal line varies with the pin placement, and hopefully entices players to walk right back to the first tee for another round.

This course is sick! Hard to believe something like this is coming out of a “rookie” competition. I very much enjoyed this one!

You must have made these names up It looks very impressive. The standard in this competition is very high, I'll be happy to reach the knockout stage looking at some of the other entries.

You should know that as a Petty your course truly lived up to its name. I think I was +14 after 9 and decided to take a break and come back to it later lol. Garcia can keep his record. You must have made these names up It looks very impressive. The standard in this competition is very high, I'll be happy to reach the knockout stage looking at some of the other entries. I actually Google'd a Hopi to English translator and each of those names are one of the suggestions. That said, I have no idea how accurate they are. And yes, I'll be happy with knockout stage at this point too...

I've played your course now Brian. I very much enjoyed it. I favourited it and gave it a 4* rating. A couple of issues I found with the course... On the 1st, there is a bunker that has a little 'fairway burn' in front of it. There was also one tee shot (5th if I remember correctly) when from the back tees the default tee shot is a pitch. The waypoint isn't set correctly. I expect to think what I'm doing before I hit my drive and change club if I deem necessary, but I don't expect the game to hand me a pitch shot by default for it. Apart from that, thumbs up from me. Edit: And being really picky, how do you drive too and from the car park?
