That's a Hopi term for "Badlands" according to my 5 minute Google search... This is a few pictures of my progress in the Rookie Design Contest. I'm going for a Tara Iti without the ocean kind of vibe, but water does come into play on a couple holes near oasises (oases?) that popped up when I generated the terrain. Ignore the lack of planting (and the planting that is there, I'm not really happy with it yet), it will probably change significantly. I'm bad even with beginner clubs, so if a few experienced designers want to test it out on master clubs to see how it plays and provide some feedback, shoot me a PM and I'll get a beta ready. This is the approach on hole 4, I found this bunkering technique at the end of my session last night while playing around trying to get a "windblown" dunes look and I'm really happy with how they blend in with the waste area. I'm going to try this technique on other holes to see if it works, but I'm afraid it may just be a little lucky lighting from this angle, not sure if I'll get it to look that way on all the holes, but if I can, I'm going to be pumped. Here's the par 5, split fairway ninth. Not sure if rocks or planting will go on the ledge face, probably both. Hole 13, one of the two oasis holes, and my attempt at a retaining wall. A closer pic from the grass side would show I failed pretty badly and still have some work to do on getting this technique down. My favorite shot by far. A custom-built, modern architecture clubhouse behind the 18th green. I'll probably take the bunkering technique above and apply it here instead of the planting, or pray I have the object room left to fill out with some grasses in places like these.

Hey (sorry I don't know your name ) Looks like your off to a great start. Retaining walls are one of the hardest things to tackle in the designer, I strongly recommend reaching out to VctryLnSprts or @griff These guys are MASTERS at retaining walls and I have learnt soooo much from them reebdoog is another one who does a very good wall! Good luck

Loving the look of the waste bunkers! Retaining wall can ruin the look of a hole if not executed correctly- The post above is definitely the place to start, what I learned is to basically user the smallest wall piece for the whole shape, then do it two more times. It's a time killer and stinks to do, but the results will show. Anyway, course is looking very promising!

I really like this theme and what you have done with it. This is going to be a really cool course to play!
Great work.

This looks great, I'm currently working on a steppe course so I might be getting a few ideas from this. I normally struggle with planting so I'll need to get have a look into some steppe courses again.

For those too lazy to click on the links above^^^^^^ (like me lol) Looking really good Lol, thank you. I don't know why it was giving me so much trouble on mobile. Imgur wouldn't let me copy the link so I had to type it in manually, and even switching to desktop mode and clicking insert image was giving me placeholder icons.

Beta is published!
How the clubhouse and 18th green ended up, similar angle pic of an earlier version up above in this thread:
1st hole:
Par 3 15th, going for the look of it being built in an abandoned quarry:
Par 3 6th, one of the holes I'm happier with:
9th hole, an earlier version of this one is also up above in this thread if you want to compare:
Easily my favorite screenshot so far I think, view from the 14th tee:

Ok Brian, I just played your full 18 beta, Strap yourself in......... I just want to start off by saying THANKYOU! For allowing me to get my 1st hole in one in TGC2019! Now, I know this is your first crack at designing a course and honestly, It looks really great! I found myself just staring at the screen on several of your tee shots taking in the splendor of the views. Really well done on this! My favorite hole was the 15th. I really loved it. Your planting throughout the course was really nice I thought. There were a couple of things that I should mention though.... (ok time to get angry with me and throw stuff at the screen ;P ) One thing that the judges would pick up on are your tee boxes aren't flat, I played from the back tees and almost all of them were sloping to some degree. This is an easy fix but something (from personal experience) you might not notice unless it was pointed out. I didn't get any pics of them because it was too hard to show moving beads in a picture lol. Moving on to your fairways... For the most part I thought they were great, you gave some good choices to make off the tees. I would look at maybe working out a few of the slopes in some patches like this one below. Hitting a good shot on the fairway can be a bit off putting when you end up in a hole. For some sculpting tips I would really recommend checking out Crazycanuck1985 on youtube, he has some very good tutorials on there. I've looked at them a few times I liked your bunkering throughout, I thought that you nailed the look you were going for with them IMO. Now for the greens.... you knew this was coming lol I'm not sure if you know about the "9 box rule" on the greens, it basically means that a pin position should have all green sloping lines forming the 9 boxes surrounding the pins. I played pin set 1 and noticed 3 pins that would fail this rule for a tour course this one below was the biggest offender (P.S. This was actually the one I got the H.I.O on ) There were also some very steep sloping around your greens which made a few other pins questionable I tried a little experiment with this green on my approach shot to see if it was possible to get the ball close to the pin. I would suggest stripping back your greens and going with a lot gentler sloping, keeping in mind that it will be CC level player that the course will be used for. VctryLnSprts gave me a lot of pointers on green sculpting when I first started designing. He's fantastic at helping out new designers. If I were you I would PM him and for him to play through it on twitch for you so you can watch and interact while he is talking you through it. Helping new designers is a passion of his and I'm positive he will be more than happy to help.... WONT YOU ERIC! lol Now with all of that said, I think you're onto something here, If you tidy up those thing I think you have a real shot at going far in this contest Oh and by the way, The first course I created was absolute garbage compared to this! Keep up the great work and I look forward to having another play when you release it again!

Really appreciate the feedback, and congrats on the hole-in-one on my "unfair" green lol. I saved the cart path work until the end and definitely forgot to go back and check all the tee boxes afterward, so I will go back and verify all of those are flat. I laughed out loud at the screen of you barely in the rough on #4 because I literally hit that same spot every time I play it and it makes me so mad because it's a perfect drive otherwise. I do know about the 9 box rule, but was pretty conscious of it while placing pins, and on mine the #6 green the lines aren't yellow, so I've either tweaked the green speed settings or flattened that green out some since publishing, I can't remember which. Or they're still yellow and I'm colorblind lol. The #12 green was intentional, but I don't think it's quite fair, especially not for CC-level play. I wanted to force an extremely accurate shot in order to get close to the hole on the approach, but I don't think I've succeeded in doing so yet on my playtests so I'll probably keep the idea but make the slopes less severe. Really appreciate the compliment on #15, I probably spent the most time on the scenery around that hole and definitely like how the quarry turned out. Overall, not too rough on the feedback, and would definitely love to hear if VctryLnSprts has input as well! Heading home shortly for lunch to play yours, Tenahka I'll let you know my thoughts. Thanks again!

Course looks awesome! But yeah #12 green needs love. Never fun for a player to miss the correct green tier and then be forced to putt off the green (from the upper tier). That slope could really work if it was half the severity and the pin was moved away from the slope a couple yards. Again, tons of potential here.
