Here is my entry to the TGC Tours Rookie Design Contest, Northwood Golf Club. As I progress I shall post about each hole. This course is inspired by holes I have played in real life. I have selected 18 holes that I feel are well designed, enjoyable to play, and stick out as being memorable. I have taken all of them from courses that do not enjoy the same profile as a St Andrews, Augusta, Pebble Beach etc - in fact the majority of them will be barely known outside of their locality. I have limited the number of holes from any one course to two. Routing the 18 holes was problematic when it came to basic layout and fitting in the hills and also a coastline in the rustic theme. I managed it in the end. Please note that the holes are inspired by real life holes and are not real life recreations, similar to how eight of my holes at Angus Bay International G. C. were on TGC2. There will be three tees with the red tees for standard club players, white tees for pro club players and blue tees for master club players. Apologies if I have the names of the club sets wrong, I am at work and have written them off memory. So, here are the holes...

1st - Par 5 Inspired by the 1st at Trentham Park Golf Club www.trenthamparkgolfclub.com/Trentham Park Golf Club is situated in Stoke-on-Trent and borders the Trentham Estate which is home to scenic gardens, a large shopping village, the Monkey Forest and an aerial adventure assault course. The parkland course used to have Simon Lynn as it's pro, brother of David, the two time European Tour winner and runner up in the 2012 USPGA Championship. The first hole is a par 5 with an angled drive, played over a small lake which is out of bounds and to a green that slopes off to the right. The version at Northwood retains the lake to the right being out of bounds, though I have made it much bigger and also added a fairway bunker on the left hand side. I have also kept the trees that line the edge of the lake, though made them smaller, less dense and reduced their number. I have removed the stream that runs into the lake, as it would have gone right through the clubhouse! This will give the player plenty to think about - play it safe to be short of the gap between bunker and lake and leave a longer shot in, or go for length off the tee with the higher risk? The green retains the slope down to the right and the bunker short right. Currently I have taken out the bunker short left to give players a better chance of hitting into the green, though I may add that in before publishing. Note as I have discussed in other threads the game treats the lake as a hazard and not out of bounds despite me setting it as so.

This concept is spot on! I'm actually going to steal this idea for one of my future courses. Looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks Chris and Joe. To my knowledge nobody else has designed a course/holes in this manner before. I might of course be wrong.

2nd - Par 4 Inspired by the 3rd at Wolstanton Golf Club www.wolstantongolfclub.co.uk/Wolstanton Golf Club was formed in 1904 and 114 years later still has a healthy, loyal membership. It is located just off the A34 a couple of miles North of Newcastle-under-Lyme town center. The course uses every inch of land it has available as it is hemmed in on three sides by housing and the fourth by the A34 dual carriageway that runs from Manchester to Portsmouth. The 3rd hole is their stroke index 1. The tree line left is out of bounds, a good idea unless you want to play your second shot from a busy main road if you send it that way. The green features two tiers and a narrow entrance. The second at Northwood retains the tree line out of bounds, the narrow entrance to the green and the tier in the middle of it (which stays steep like it's real life counter part so hitting the right level is imperative). I have altered the greenside bunkering and brought some trees on the right closer to the fairway. I have also left out the ditch that is left of the fairway in driving range. Because I forgot about it. Whoopsie, I'll add it in if I get time when I've finished the course!

3rd - Par 3 Inspired by the 3rd at Nefyn & District Golf Club (Old nine) nefyn-golf-club.co.uk/Nefyn & District is by far the most stunning looking course I have ever played. It has 27 holes of beautiful golf with a sea view on every single hole on both the Front and Old nines, while the New nine had immaculate greens, possibly the best I have ever played on. It is a course that has the highest profile of the holes selected and attracts golfers from far and away. The third hole on the Old nine is not a long par 3 but is breathtaking. You tee off from the edge of the cliffs and play over the rocks to a long, narrow green. While it is only a short iron for the longer hitters it looks deceptive and the green seems much further away than the yardage suggests. Northwood's third hole retains many of the features of Nefyn's hole, though not without some minor alterations. I have moved the bunker from the right of the hole to the front and in it's place on the right I have put a large rock, more for aesthetics than to catch people out though it will affect a bad miss hit. Stand on the tee, enjoy the view and aim at the green that like it's real life counterpart slopes from back to front, though not as severely.

I can't wait until you have a Beta published! I really want to see how you're tying all these holes together! Every time I look at someones W.I.P I feel like I'm not in a rookie contest anymore!

I might not be publishing a beta, especially now you can play test your course under normal conditions in local play. You might have to wait until the final design is published.

I'll see what date it is when I finish the course. I'm not really one for publishing betas to be honest.
