I wonder if anyone will ever do anything to stop the self inflicted genocide occurring in inner city black communities, because a better background check doesn't stop a street gun sale. It's amazing how the media stays so silent on that epidemic, and then one person gets killed in Hawaii and it's national news for weeks. It starts with education and better housing. It starts with lifting people out of poverty. You're right that our gun problems in inner cities has nothing to do with gun control, and that illegal guns aren't really impacted by gun control laws. None of those people are the targets of gun control. Gun violence doesn't just affect our inner cities and poorest people. It affects everyone - middle-class America in urban, suburban and rural areas. The gun violence problem in America is multi-faceted. Availability of weapons is one of those facets. No one is arguing that gun control, alone, solves our gun problem, but that's a really bad reason to avoid enacting stricter gun control laws. But for all the national cries of racism and such, you'd think it would at least be a priority for the progressive media outlets. Instead some white woman from out west goes missing and it commands every single network for weeks. I just don't get why it doesnt get any attention, if you could stop that problem, you could also close probably 40 percent of all prisons nationwide.

You're right - inner city crime gets little attention because a) it's run of the mill & b) because the media power network is inherently white owned and influenced. Agree that if you could solve inner city violence you can reduce costs elsewhere in the system - 40% number is a bit plucked out of thin air, but I agree that it can be substantial. Scotland solved an inner city knife crime problem over here in recent years - toughened up laws on carrying knives and crucially invested heavily in youth services and programmes. Who would think that spending some of your resources on the youth can help improve their outcomes and by extension wider society Back in the US - the biggest driver your prison population right now is the criminalization of low level drug use. It does nothing to solve the drug "problem". Does make a a few fat white dudes very rich tho.

They are filled with hardcore drug sellers, heroin and cocaine, and weapons charges, having committed an assault or not. Dwi is also growing each year. Drug users are given a chance of long term treatment, and if they fail, yes they go to prison.

Incidentally, if there are any fat white people getting rich in this mess, it's lawyers. Because in N.Y. blacks are primarily the street dealers, being fed by Mexican and south American criminal enterprises.

Chief Justice Roberts won't vote for this. Roberts isn't the "conservative" they hoped he'd be. the Dems won't go on a gun collection frenzy. But they will ban assault weapons and require background checks on EVERY purchase. Both are fine with me but the process won't be. I wonder if anyone will ever do anything to stop the self inflicted genocide occurring in inner city black communities, because a better background check doesn't stop a street gun sale. Self inflicted genocide in inner city blacks? Epidemic? Seriously?
Inner city crime has been dropping steadily and dramatically in the US since 1991. Do you even go to inner cities?

Actually the numbers for the major gangs is way up. La today is more dangerous today than it was in the glory gangsta days of the 1990s, and I'm getting my information from men who were in those streets within the past few years. Factor in newer gangs like ms13, and the problem is growing exponentially. Trump recently took credit for deporting a large number of them, but that doesn't help because they just walk on back over when they are ready.

Official numbers show decline in murder rates across the country's cities of somewhere between 57 and 70% since '91 but you know "men who were in those streets in the past few years" who see it getting exponentially worse. You either bought into some myth or you are pushing one for your own reasons.
Things that are actually getting worse in recent years period are school shootings and opioid overdoses, predominantly outside of black inner city communities. But conservatives want to focus on crises in inner city crime and illegal border crossings, both of which are on the decline. So rather than asking why progressives aren't focused on these issues, maybe ask why conservatives have decided to focus on them. To me there's a pretty clear answer.

Funny thing is, Erixon's original post explained the progressive viewpoint. The solution to problems of inner city crime are educating people and lifting them out of poverty. Progressive policies are focused on that.
If you have a complaint about progressive media not focusing enough on black on black crime I would argue that first, we don't really have any progressive media in the USA, and second outside of Fox News the mainstream media is focused on what is going to get them more advertising dollars, not a political agenda. Natalie Holloway and Elizabeth Smart bring the viewers that their advertisers want.

He's been dead for 136 year's, yet he can still wind up far right snowflakes that much that they have to resort to this. Marx is as relevant as ever, at least in my lifetime. Has there ever been a successful Marxist system in place that was sustainable for large populations, say 370 million people? Hell, has there ever been a successful Marxist system in place ever? As far as I know, there has been no regime in history that has implemented Marxist ideals completely. Therefore, it's just an unproven theory on paper, correct? You're correct, Jimmy. Socialism/Communism has never existed at any point in the past, not it the way Marx envisioned it at least. This is a reason why informed right wingers are frightened about about his idea's and would happily allow book burning of Das Kapital, The Communist Manifesto and Grundrisse. Marx argued the point that socialism is the natural path after capitalism and that's why his name always pops up in times of economic crisis. Also worth pointing out that "Marxism" isn't a system. Socialism/Communism are systems whilst Marxism, at least in my opinion, is a scientific critique of capitalism and a philosophical oversight of the political economy and history. So much to learn from him, it isn't all just about socialism.

I think you could argue the same about capitalism. It has never been implemented completely. Certainly nowhere with a population of 370 million.
Seriously 370 million kind of a dumb hurdle, because how many countries have had this many people? 2 or 3? Even the US didn't have 370 million people 20 years ago.
Plenty of countries have implemented a social welfare state along with a regulated market based economy in recent times. The degree of government regulation and intervention in the economy varies. In general these systems have been pretty successful.

An interesting question gets answered.
To the editor: One letter writer asks, “How can we guarantee that a democratic socialist takeover of the Democratic Party will not descend into the same chaos we see currently in ‘socialist’ countries like Venezuela and Nicaragua?”
The answer: Why do people so often cite the failures of democratic socialism by cherry picking their examples? Why not cite Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, Great Britain, Japan, Australia, Italy, Canada, Norway, Spain, Finland, Ireland, Belgium, New Zealand, Austria, Switzerland or the Netherlands — all countries that have successfully achieved a balance between capitalism and socialism?
No country is perfect, but citing the worst examples does not move the conversation forward in any meaningful way.

You can't really paint a broader stroke than "educate them and lift them out of poverty". I don't know how to stop it other than march into these cities and declare martial law, but that would be considered racist, even though it would stop the killing. The entire media industry is progressive, they just don't care. Minorities only matter to the left when they can apply them to their talking points. Lowest level of black unemployment in our nation's history, thank you President Trump! Well done!

Trump’s claims about the black unemployment rate are somewhat misleading. While it’s undeniable that the rate has hit a new low, it is also true that black unemployment began declining during the Obama administration and has been falling steadily for the past several years. Kansas City may boast an unemployment rate of 3.6%. But take the city’s Blue Hills neighbourhood. Blue Hills is 91% African American and the unemployment rate is 17%. Neighboring Ivanhoe is 86% African American and the unemployment rate is even higher, at 26%. Read more here
