I did not know where to post this, so I figured the "clubhouse" was as good of a place as any.
So for Christmas, somebody gave me a steam controller. It is a sweet controller for FPS games and the like. But decided to play TGC the other day with it. Easy enough to set up. Left all the default settings on it. As you know this controller only has one stick on the left and a trackpad of sorts ont he right where the stick would have been. Tried playing by swinging using the pad on the right, using my thumb to rub back and forth on the pad to simulate the swing (sort of like a mouse). That did not work as good as I hoped. So I changed the TGC in game setting to allow for left stick swings. Decided to use my right thumb to swing (using the one stick on the left), resting the side of my right hand on the controller, my right fingers gripping the top of the controller (near the triggers) and moving my hand to swing instead of my thumb. Hard to describe, but works really, really well. Was hitting 2/3rd of my shots dead straight, with an occasional fade, but not out of the cone unless I lofted more than 1 or 1.5 bar.
Decided to give this method a try with a PS4 controller (right hand/left stick). And I will be damned but using this method I am hitting straighter than I could using my right thumb on the right stick. I think it has to do with having my right fingers over the top of the controller gripping it. It steadies my hand. I can look at my hand and move the stick back and forth and it is a straight motion every time, whereas I really needed to concentrate to do this with the traditional way using the right stick...
Just wondering if anyone else uses this technique that I am so poorly describing?
I will probably stay with the PS4 controller for TGC. Even though I can get dead straight swings with the steam controller, I don't always get 100% shots with it. About every 3rd shot I hit somewhere between 91-95%...much like I used to do on my playstation 4 console that prompted me to get the game for PC...

How do you change the settings on PS4 for left analogue stick? I want to give this a try. My drives are ok it's just my approach shots that don't go straight.

The technique you're describing is fairly common I believe. The right thumb/right stick or left/left method is less consistent in my opinion.

In the Tgc game settings under settings then controls it is the first option there "left stick swing" on/off.

The technique you're describing is fairly common I believe. The right thumb/right stick or left/left method is less consistent in my opinion. That surprises me. But I guess putting index middle and ring finger on or around the top of the controller helps steady the hand. Putting takes some getting used to that way for me.

On second thought, after re-reading the post above, this technique is new to me. I use the right hand on the left joystick, but I grip the stick with my right thumb and index finger. (Thumb at 6:00 and index finger at 12:00). In my opinion this gives the best stability, but the technique described above could work too and more power to you if this is your method.

I also have a PS4 controller but never use the right stick. I've been playing TGC for a year now and in the first 9 months I almost never hit the ball straight. Always slightly to the left (well within the cone) and I adjusted my shot for that. 2 or 3 months ago I decided that hitting straight was the next target to achieve in my game. I found out that my natural feel for pushing back the joystick was a bit of. I'm now aiming for 5:30 hours instead of 6 oclock. Works like a charm. Almost all my shots are dead straight (max 1 or 2 pixels off; usually to the left but now also sometime to the right). Once I got the hang of that technique I also managed to reduce the sub 100% shot significantly. I always had a couple per round and now 1 or 2 per tournament. Learning how to putt and how to hit straight were the 2 biggest improvement in my game in the last few months and brought my from a decent web player to a euro player with 1 out of 8 cuts missed.

So you use your right thumb on the left stick? Funny when I was using the right thumb on the right stick I had a slight natural pull to the left like you are describing. When I would loft over one bar I would have to look at the stick when hitting and do a nice even motion. If I missed I always hooked. Now with the new technique I do not hook. If anything when I loose concentration I have a slight fade to the right. But it's less often than when using the right stick. I still have not figured out how to putt consistently...using the boom boom technique and modifying based on how I'm missing on the particular greens on the course. So far I have missed only one cut of my first 11 PGA events. But last 5 weeks I missed one and all the others were nail biters. My next improvement needs to be putting more consistently, controlling my nerves in tournaments and chippping. I played Euro for fun this week and shot -44. Had Crazycanuck as a ghost. I was routinely better on my approaches than he was but I lost count of the amount of chip ins he had. I had about 4 for the tournament and he had about that many every round and shot -45. LOL.

That was a typ fault. It should be; never use the left stick...... Regarding chips; i still need to analyse how (cross)winds are affecting the flight of the ball.

On PS4 console, I use left thumb on left stick but I look at controller never at TV when I do my swings. I saw that when I looked at controller and did a couple practice back swings my shots went straighter than if I looked at TV. So I pull back and count to 2 one-thousand (3 if I am over water) and then whip it forward. I do still get the 1-2 91-94% swings when I get overanxious on the approach shots. I usually get good results with this method otherwise. I found that turning off Depth of Field and Vsync provided better frame rates on PS4 which the stutter can lead to more sub 100% swings. I've had far less after doing that and game runs better on most courses since overall the game is poorly optimized.
