If you look at the Web leader boards you'll find I'm currently T2.
So I'm almost there with my game.
Unfortunately, you will see me vanish like the wind come rounds 3 and 4.
The question is, why?
The answer? The only two things left in my game that I need help with.
1) Max Firm Greens
2) Elevated greens that constantly send your ball back to the fairway after a pitch/flop.
Those two things single-handedly destroyed my 3rd round. More #2 than #1.
#2 I have already gotten some tips on and am going to work on those.
But #1?
I am clueless. Nothing I do gets me even remotely close to the pin. And on holes where I know I need at least 20 yards roll out and the pin is 5 yards from the front of the green, forget it.
I have tried lofting. I have tried going for the fairway. I have tried purposely trying to hit it into the nearby rough, if close enough to the pin. Doesn't matter. I almost always end up with at least 20 foot putts if not longer. While my putting has improved significantly, I still can't make putts of those distances consistently.
So how do you guys do it? How do you play max firm greens so well?
Any help will be greatly appreciated on any of the 2 issues above.
PGA, I'm almost ready.

I'm all for everyone getting better...that said I am NOT Ian ...but I'm fairly good...what course are you having trouble with? Which hole in particular? I'll play it and see if the hole is possibly unfair or maybe you just haven't hit the right shot? Let me know if you're interested. I'll stream it for you. Also, some of the tougher courses a great shot will leave you a 15-20 ft putt...that's by design.

It's just those issues in general. Any course with max firm greens will do. Preferably a setup where the pin is about 5 yards from the front of the green. Those are really murder.

Well...Legacy is very tough...if you can get it around 20 ft on most holes...that's not bad. As far as having the pin up close to the fairway...the designer hopefully made it so you can just run the ball up there and get near the fringe, BUT there are several courses where there are crazy mounds just in front...that's tricked up IMO and it's just going to be pure luck. You were talking about your third round...which course... I'll look at it in a just a few

2) Elevated greens that constantly send your ball back to the fairway after a pitch/flop.
There is the answer to most of your questions right there. Your short game is lacking. You need work on this area both knowing when the ball comes flying back, if it will come flying back and choose a shot type that won't do that. There is more than 1 way to skin a cat. If you find yourself always choosing to do the same thing when faced with 14 yards, therein lie a big part of your problem.
I seen you mention the partial power shot was impossible, well, it is not impossible and not by a long shot. Learn it, love it.
Have fun and good luck.

That's pretty obvious. Thank you for your tip on learning the partial power shot. I will definitely work on it.

I agree with BoomBoom...I personally have at least a couple shots for a variety of approach shots inside 80 yds. You MUST know how the green conditions effect your shot..for example you CAN"T flop and use a lot of loft on soft greens unless you play for the backspin because there will be A LOT! On firm greens it will be vastly different. You also have to know when you should pitch vs hitting a normal shot inside 75 yds. Those results are greatly different depending on the slope of the green. It could mean being 2 feet from the pin vs 15 ft or backspin off the green. How do I know..because this has all happened to me in the early going...waaayyy back . I just started practicing and taught myself the different shots and their behaviors on the greens. The partial power shot on flops is a MUST to learn and get comfortable with. Good luck man!

Yeah I learned the hard way... Id flop up a shot have it roll back to me, now it more about feel, as in using the flop shot but dialing down the power, itll drop and sit there or if any backspin very minimal... The 7 iron 9 yard pitch shot is one I am really loving.. It chip from off the green with it, and only it... Getting pretty good at it, make more than I miss now...
There are some greens, it doesn't matter what the heck you do if they are very firm... Ive landed short and watch it kick left , right, short, bounce so far across the green etc... On those types, I just try to get it reasonably close, looking for any slopes, any help to keep me with a shot or putt I can at least make a par...
Ill say it again, the last couple weeks, my game has improved tremendously just from reading BoomBoom's thread and charting my clubs, using the aforementioned pitch shots, etc... Getting closer and closer to the pins on every approach.... I still have my moments where I may shoot horribly (Like the Euro 2,3,and 4th rounds) but I am comfortable now with any course, any condition and know that I am Oh so close to making the PGA/Euro... I pointed out to someone the other day, the journey of being a better player in the game is what is so much fun... Looking at each green, and FINALLY learning that firing at the pin is NOT the best option most times, finding that spot or area to hit, and using the conditions to funnel toward the pin, and once I pull it off, that is FUN to me.... BoomBoom's thread made me focus on all the above, and it has helped me tremendously...
Keep going at the firm greens, before long you will make those shots...

It's in the driving range area ... He gives a few tips but I put on the work to the tune of about 6 total hours charting every club with loft and such But it absolutely works ... He gives some good tips
